Still no ideas SS RRR? I thought you know everything.
Let's see... so because an engine is turning over at a higher RPM rate with each downshift, it could be more friction, but it's not vacuum, but it can be measured with a gauge.....
I got nothing. Please enlighten me.

Seriously, what is it that slows an engine down when downshifting that is not vacuum and can be measured with a gauge?

No seriously. I am looking for the answer to this:

Would you be kind enough to tell me what it is?

Would anyone happen to know the approximate amount of gas which is represented by a quarter margin (space between two lines) on the fuel gauge of a 4th gen F-body? Maybe only someone with this knowledge from an official source can answer because to calculate it would mean to divide the tank capacity by the physical space operated by the fuel needle, which extends past where the lines are drawn.

So far I've had to calcuate mpg by recording the place of the fuel needle and miles. The problem is that the amount of fuel I need to use for the needle to go where it was before filling takes highway miles mixed with city, and I want to calcuate the individual mileages.

Depends on how exact you want to do this. If you want the most accurate results then you need to build a tank that holds a predetermined amount of fuel and then calculate the consumption after a given amount of distance. If not then do like everyone else and calculate consumption every time you fill up.

Just an educated guess.
On mine, the half way mark indicates around 5 gallons. The 1/4 mark indicates around 1-2 gallons. When mine hits halway, it drops like a rock.

You could always fill the tank at a specific pump. Drive a certain amount of miles, then fill it back up to the top at the same pump.

Then miles/gallons= mileage. Pretty much just as accurate as the full tank version.

To set the record straight, I do believe gears affect mileage no doubt, but not close to what people claim how going to a steeper gear will "kill" gas mileage. Fuel efficiency is far more influenced by load on the engine and how hard it has to work.

I don't trust you to get the results right, and it wouldn't change my mind anyway based on my own personal experience with the multiple amount of gear swaps I've done in my on turd in the last 14 years.

30mpg out of an auto? I knew Iowa was hilly, but it must be downhill everywhere you go.
I had to make an account just to get in on this! I recently took my z28 (2.73 rear, Auto) on a trip, filled up my tank before i left home. Cruise set on 72ish. when i got there my trip odometer read 301.2 my car took 29.95 gallons. Missouri has hills up and down. Now to be fair, when i drive it hard it gets mid teens. Fried my auto that way (1st and 2nd slip like crazy). swapping to a t56 now. debating 3.73s or 4.10s please feel free to tune in on this.

Two fills? 150 per tank highway, that's horrendous.

Never heard of a 30 gallon tank...

Depends on what you are going to use the car for. I am pretty conservative and if it were me and using the car primarily for street I'd do 3.73's. If you are going to go to the track often then go with 4.10's.

It's a reference to how many gallons were consumed during the trip, dummy.

Good thing you clarified, cause we'd be lost.

Thanks!
