Default Tranny explosion

Well went to the track for the last time last night. Put the slicks back on the car and was going for 10.30's in the boat and then this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0e8RQ1Mhyg

Broke the case and drive shaft and cross member and mangled the exhaust. Got it all apart today and checked the motor bell housing and flywheel. All good thank god. Done for the season. Will be ready for spring!!!

Was a Mike Harris built 4L60E. Mike runs 10.50's N/A in an Impala SS and get 300-400 passes out of his tranny's. I think what happened is the aluminum driveshaft came apart. It was 3" stock replacement shaft. So I think it was overpowered. Going with a Denny's driveline Chromemolly 3.5" drive shaft. And Mike will build me another 60 to go with it.

You were using a stock 3" aluminum ds in that big car? Wow, I've seen them brake at the track in just bolt on M6 cars. Those things have wall diameters slightly thicker than a coke can...

It bent the drive shaft to a 45 degree angle and sheared the yoke off at the rearend! Any opinions on the Denny's nitrous ready chromemolly drive shafts. Been looking at them and very impressed.

Dang, dude sorry to hear that. Now is the time to upgrade

Denny's make a good nitrous shaft, or PST makes a killer alum 3.5" shaft, rated at 800-1000hp. Speed Inc had a GP on them a few months ago. Larry is running one, and he's in the mid 9's with it.

That's one good thing about having an iron block. If it was aluminum you probably would've had to kiss that goodbye as well.

The STOCK shafts in these were steel. Frank said a "aluminum stock replacement".

If he had had a truly stock driveshaft in it he would not have had it fail. The reason we swap driveshafts is because the stock one is balanced to a pretty low speed so 3.73 or better gears can cause a vibration.

Yes I do. Car hit third gear and went to a terrible vibration. when we let off the throttle it like running over a land mine. Have had some say it started in the trans. But i don't think so. I may be wrong But!!!

Yes sir. It bent the **** out of it but it worked. The drive shaft broke at the rear yoke and bent it to about a 45 degree angle and wedged itself behind the heat shield for the muffler.

Getting that much power thru any 4L60E is impressive and the extra weight you car has makes it that much more so.

I wouldn't blame the trans at all. Sounds and looks like the driveshaft broke. A driveshaft swinging all over the place can break transmission cases and bellhousings, it happens a lot.
