Advantage of speed density tune vs MAF tune
Hey guys I was wondering what the advantages are to having a speed density tune vs keeping the MAF are?
My car currently is speed density tuned (mail order pig rich) all mods to the car are listed in my garage (forged 383, ported tfs heads, LE 236/242 cam). I am going to be having it dyno tuned in spring. So i would like to know which one is better to go with and why.
Thanks
Devin

Isn't MAF the "newer technology"? I would think GM had a reason for switching to MAF. And it seems much easier to tune if your N/A, but I can see how it could get complicated with forced induction setups.

Wicked said it. Some motors with really agressive cams dont idle well with MAF. A SD tune seems to be more friendly with more agressive combos. Also many have found they they can get just a little more power with a SD tune. Also some find it easier to tune becasue they can use VE master.
My personal experience, I gained around 8RWHP with SD but I prefer the MAF tune because it should provide better mileage and better adapt to climate changes. Also I dont have any idle issues so the MAF works for me.

when tuned properly on a setup that needs a SD tune there is an advantage to be had.
The reason for me going open loop was because at idle the O2's would see fresh air with a free-flowing exhaust and a cam with large overlap. The MAF was not liking the overlap either
A SD tune also lets you attack the VE tables, I dont see myself ever switching to a MAF-based in any car I own

Ive tuned both and didnt gain a thing going from one to another. The only reason I see going to SD is if your FI or a all out race car. Some will say that the maf doent like big cams. It can be tuned but requires some time. I will agree that SD is easy as hell tune but I prefer using the maf.
