I have to confess I had an incident the other day. Out of this, I have written the 11th commandment:

"Thou shalt not place anything in the lifter valley... ever... period... no matter what."

No tool, no rag, nothing ever. Here's what I did: I was sealing up the intake on the red car build and got everything seated nicely. I began setting the torque wrench and started looking for the cap for the RTV. I looked over at the intake... I left the cap on the spider.

Been a long time since I did something like this, and it was a good reminder. So far, have never failed to catch a bone-headed move and correct it, but I'd hate to start now.

OP, hope your replacement oil pump and a good cleaning fixes your problem.

Well, not working on other's cars anymore, so I'd hopefully only shoot my own feet with a mistake like that.

Put everything back together....

The noise comes right under the car right in the middle of the engine and the tranny.

Something's hurt. Pull the engine.

Wondering-why did you drop the oil pan? Was there an issue with this engine?

Kind of sounds like a cracked flexplate. Are you able to see any sign of cracks on it?

you could try pulling the tranny and torque converter. then run the car again to see if the sound continues.

We feel your pain. Good luck with the work.

You need to tear down the entire engine. There is no telling where bits of that towel or silicon could be. And they will both cause damage.
