LT1 cam help
#4
Number one ate both lobes, killed both LS7 lifters. Car was running fine, just had a noise under the valve cover and I went looking. So I need to pull the cam and start looking for it's replacement.
Chased down the cam, it's a Schneider.
Car has all the normal hot rod stuff. Long tube headers, 42 pound injectors, BBK throttle, intake is opened up, ports matched to the heads, big fuel pump. Also has a TH400 and S-60 w/4.30 gears.
It's sick ignition wise too. Has a miss I've been chasing. Was under the hood playing with the ICM when I decided to find the noise. Now I get to look at the Optispark too.
It ran 12.66 @ 107 last Saturday here in Tucson. Miss, flat cam and all.

Someone pointed me to this cam:

Any idea why it says not for LT1 or LT4? Is it a decent cam for my car?

The 503 is a great cam.
And the LT4 is an LT1, just with a few specific parts. Read: http://www.grandsportregistry.com/lt1vslt4.htm

Here are some pictures of the cam. I think it's a reground stocker. A lot of metal is somewhere

Props to that thing running 12.66 @ 107 like that! Damn strong runner! I would expect 13's from the cam specs and the wiped lobe!

Comp Cams recommended a cam for my car. It's a custom grind.
They suggest using a part number 07-000-8 with a grind number
3017/3038HR111+4. "This is a custom grind camshaft and will take 3-5 business
days to complete. I have provided the specs below."
Duration @ .050 236/242
Lift w/1.5 rockers .543/.540
LSA 111 degrees
Not far off the old cam.
Any comments? Also asked if they could do a flat tappet mechanical cam as I'm worried about metal from the old cam, they say no. Did a google search and found people that have done it?

As I said, I'm worried about metal in the engine. Flat tappet cams are not so sensitive to debris. It was just a thought to avoid more cam problems.
I'm going to pull the engine and look through it but am not planning on pulling it all apart and having it cleaned. More or less I want to see if this crap made it through the oil system and wrecked the bearings.
I don't know where this will all end up but I'm very tempted to toss a regular "old school" small block in and just forget this LT1. I found some small distributors that might fit under the cowl. Not a pleasant thought to have to pull the engine to get the distributor or intake off

Was looking at things yesterday and found the reason for the "killed" cam. The plate that holds the little "dog bone" part that keeps the lifter from turning has a bent finger. So the lifters must have come out of the holder and turned and that's what killed the cam. Question is why? All I can guess is somehow one of the lifters "lifted" the plate. Can't see any other way the finger would have bent. At least now I know why it only damaged one cylinder.
