Default Should I sell my 1996 Caprice 9C1 LT1 because of emissions?

I'm so confused with what I should do, I love my car and It's my first vehicle I've ever owned but the emissions part pisses me off. I bought the car last August for $3000 with 109638 miles on It threw a craigslist ad in Oak Lawn, Illinois.

My friend warned me you do not want a 1996 because of emissions just keep looking for a 1995 but I was way to Impatient and when I checked out this car and seen how clean It was I couldn't resist. So you can't delete smog pump, cut off cats or anything and I want to do serious things to my car and eventually do a LSX swap.

what do you guys think, I'm thinking about selling it and buying a 1995 Impala eventually when I can afford one.

Here's a picture of the day I bought my ride, I took this literally right down the street from the guys house I just bought It from, we had to throw some plates on there real quick then jumped on the highway to get home.

You cant get rid of it because itll throw a code or because itll fail visual inspection??

You can easily tune out the check engine light for removing the garbage emission stuff. Clean 9c1 btw. Do you have any other pictures of it?

Wait rephrase that first sentence, but my codes are for o2 sensors, and my EGR solenoid or something but I don't want to deal with emissions period. I don't think I could swap a LSX into It either because when I go for my emission testing It's not the original engine or pcm. yeah I have a few more pictures, give me a second I'll upload them.

These are pictures of how the car was when I bought It, It had a bent *** garbage hood primed white and the horrible paint job is flaking off everywhere.

Uhh... tuning out and removing emissions is easier than selling a car.

If your vehicle is 1996 or newer you have to do emissions...

Yep I upgraded to the black edition ash tray, same model and structure for a stealthier look and it's always good to have it there for whoever smokes and helps me work on my car.

I thought here it was a PITA for emissions being you have to be 87 and older to be emissions exempt. No matter what if it came any emissions equipment at all regardless of year it has to be present if you get pulled over by the "Smog Police`. Such a gay system that still doesnt seem to work and wrecking the hotrod world.

There is someone on here right now who is doing an LSx swap into a 96 or 97; and has to pass the plug-in emissions testing. I've been keeping an eye on it, because it is possible to put a 96/97 VIN into a LSx PCM. No one knows if it'll for sure work to pass the plug-in test though.

First off emissions is no reason to sell the car. Getting around them out here is easy. It's all in the tune. If you can tune it out you're fine. IL doesn't do a visual, they only do what is called an OBD II readiness scan. They plug into the ALDL and check emissions readiness and function. Fun part if, you can have the PCM say the needed systems are functioning and ready even if they aren't on the car. Call up Speed Inc. in Schaumburg, or AMS in West Chicago. Or any one of the many other shops that can tune the car. As for O2's just fix them, they're cheap enough. If you do sell it though, get anything 95 or older, and as long as it passed emissions in 07 then you never have to go again....perfect reason why I own a 93....

As far as I know here, if you tune out emissions it will still pass cause they also do a obd2 port ready test. If it "looks" ok your all set.

I would only sell the car if you can find one is as good shape. That thing looks very clean.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume since u can't or don't Wana change your o2's or evap parts as needed to pass tests , then once you do a search on what it will take for a lsx swap.. U will find it takes turning wrenches, a money tree, skills, and research . And you will say **** it and give up. And as if the engine bay didn't look terrible enough from age, the ash tray plug is by far the crasiest under hood rig I've ever seen. Just sayn

It is the opposite here in TX as '95 and older must do the sniffer test to pass emissions and OBDII (96+) is more desireable as you can tune your computer to pass and you won't have problems with inspections every year. Visuals are really not an issue here.

Weird...here in NC if your car is more than 15 years old; visual inspection only...no emissions testing whatsoever Otherwise they just check the smog system by scanning the pcm. I'm still jealous of SC though...they can get away with whatever the hell they want ....no inspection EVER...you want to put a blown big block with straight pipes and 90% tint on your brand new Camaro?...no problem!

I wish, Houston is really bad about emission testing. I am hoping that OBDI gets dropped soon from testing as it did in Chiago, however, I'm not holding my breath.

I have a '96 in an emmissions state and have 1, not 2 cats, no rear o2's, no AIR & no EGR. throws no codes so it passes!
if you want no cats at all get these-> http://www.frozenboost.com/index.php...4f7d43fc319eaa

just keep it and restore it to a good condition.. there is no sense to sell a solid car to buy the same one again...and to just dump money into it.
