Default Keyed hub?

I am installing a efi 24x ignition on my newly rebuilt 355; should be around 370rwhp. I am wondering if I should buy a keyed hub or keep the factory hub.

My car has about the same power and I spun mine off. You should get a keyed hub or have your stock one keyed.

Go for a keyed hub while you're there. I'm running the professional products one because my stock hub kept coming off due to an aftermarket crank. No more problems now and it's good insurance.

This is the hub I will be using http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JEGS-...item2eb4a64c21; will it work with the stock balancer.

Any good engine machine shop would have them, or Jegs and Summit.

How does this happen if you TQ the bolt down correctly? i have a callies crank and a stock hub with no issues and im around 430rwhp with no boost.

Stock hub is press fit and not all aftermarket cranks have the same snout diameter as factory. Ton of rpm + loose fitting hub, means the bolt will work itself loose and the hub will eventually get chewed up inside. Had it happen atleast 2 or 3 times before I figured what the problem was and just keyed the crank. If you're planning on adding a supercharged this will only multiply the problem.

I have an Eagle crank for reference.

Fixed that for you.

^ With enough TQ and rpms the hub can spin even with the factory crank. A keyed hub is just insurance; if the hub spins it can screw up the end of the crank and changing the crank takes a lot more $$ than a keyed hup would have cost you.

^ Lol I was just messing with you man. I've got a different hub on mine with a key. I've always thought a pressed-on hub isn't a really great idea.

^ Yep I was shocked when I first pulled the hub off a few years ago and noticed there was a spot in the crank for a key, but the hub was not keyed. There was a thread a few weeks ago where a fellow lt1 owner raced a mustang and ended up spinning the hub off on his new motor; I don't want that to happen to me so I ordered the one from jegs.

FWIW I had issues getting my Pioneer keyed hub on. They actually machined it either too small, or my compstar crank snout was too big. I had to have it put on a lathe. After that it was nice and tight. It goes on with my press tool easily. I like having a keyed hub, because you can be sure things are not going to move, and can mark your balancer for reference.

I have an extra pioneer keyed hub that was machined a little over, that i can let go for cheap.

The Jegs piece is nice, and you can get a multipack of keys at Advanced Auto that will have one of the right size.

I have a rebuilt LT1 punched to a 355 and we put a forged crank in it, the stock balancer assembly wouldn't fit the new crank because it had a key. So my local machine shop guy is going to have his crankshaft guy cut a key slot in it. It is a pretty simple process and takes only a day or two turn around. IMHO key your crank and balancer/hub. Cheap insurance against spin-off.

Its good insurance to have and gives you piece of mind. You don't want a hub coming off at high rpms.

If you want to go overkill or ever have plans to supercharge you might want to get a double keyed hub / big block chevy outer diameter hub.

^ That is a nice piece, but I have ordered the jegs unit; should be here today I hope it is not machined smaller than the stock hub.
