Default Results from Supercharger to Turbo

I had said that I would post after I did the swap and fill you all in on my experience on both,so..

OK, Here is my results / opinions since I had both on my LT1

Power:
Supercharger, 648 RWHP / 612 Tq @ 12 lbs
Turbo, 643 / 649 Tq 11-12 lbs (Not completely tuned)

Ease of install:
Supercharger: a few hours ( or a weekend)
Turbo: A few years. (or a few months)

Cost:
Turbo cost more.

At the track:
Supercharger: Boost came on too violently, pulled good in the upper RPM's
Turbo: Boost came on hard but a little more gradually, Pulled like a beast in the upper RPM's

Trap Speed:
Supercharger: 137 mph
Turbo: 132 mph (In 108* weather) again not completely tuned and with a bad bog off the line.

Lag:
Supercharger: None
Front Mount Turbo: None.

Heat under Hood:
Supercharger: none to speak
Turbo: Is coated as the headders, Not real bad but noticeable more heat.

Change Boost:
Supercharger: PIA, Had to remove crank pulley, change to a smaller belt
Turbo: Flip of a switch or a spring change out.

As of now, I am liking the Turbo more, Yes it was a nightmare to install and I haven't driven it on the street yet, but at the shootout, to me after getting a final good tune in, I think it will be much better. At least no more belts to worry about (at $100.00 a pop) and if you want more or less boost for track or street conditions, like I said, just a button away..

The hot & cold parts were from PTS in San Antonio but that's a whole other story, They went out of business as soon as I picked up my kit. It had to be completely redone, Sunshine Performance in Killeen tx did the mod and install and they did a great job.

Sounds like its going to be an animal. What size turbo did you end up going with? I can't wait to see some track results.

went with a 76mm, at the shoot out with app 11lbs and a real bad bog off the line (Due to lack of time for tuning) it went 11.1 @ 132 mph so far. I want to run 15 lbs..

sounds like a mid ten second ride to me once you get a good launch and short time and the tune finshed.

Whats the bottom end like?

You say the Turbo cost more which is entirely believeable... do you mind sharing the exact totals of each setup including all the little runs to the parts store for the little things?

I am eager to do a Turbo setup but would like to thoroughly research all the dynamics of such a project before diving in.

Could you comment on the most difficult part of the Turbo setup as well?

I saw it run and the car is a beast. Once he gets it dialed in and that 15#s I think low 10s maybe 9s. The track just wouldnt hold it when he tested.

I would have to try and add thing up because I purchased items that were not needed such as a tubular K-member and my kit had to be completely custom made because the shop that originally made the kit was a POS!
But it you are just talking about the kit itself, Supercharger was app $5,000+ and the turbo was around $6,000+ this is just for all the parts, no machine work, no motor parts, just wastegates, blowout valves, injectorsTurbo, Supercharger, intercooler ect..
so far my cost to swap from super to turbo is $18,000+ mind you I already had the rods, heads, Machine work alone + the main caps, crank, pistons and cam was $5,000

I am eager to do a Turbo setup but would like to thoroughly research all the dynamics of such a project before diving in.

Well like I said, my kit was a POS. I had to have a shop install it because it did not fit so they had to cut, weld relocate ect. The supercharger kit could be installed easily in a weekend..

Let me get this straight....you spent $18,000 to upgrade from a blower to turbo...to make LESS HP?

Am I missing something here? Hopefully you can get it tuned better and turn up the boost or I'd be pissed blowing $18 grand for little to no performance advantage over a blower.

Trust me your not even close to being the only one that has had problems getting one of their turbo systems to fit. We had major problems with one of their $12,000.00 corvette kits. That was a fun conversation with the customer.

Easy there big fella. It's still an apples to oranges comparison. Moe had the supercharger on his car for years with alot of time to tune it and take it to the track multiple times in good weather conditions.

He just made his first outing in 108* weather. Give him some time to tune it, tweak it, and run it the car in some good conditions before making comments like that.

The car is going to be a beast Moe, can't wait to see what it does with some more tuning and boost, car should be very capable of low/mid 140MPH trap speeds at the boost levels you want.

Adding to Jason's comments, the powerband will be different as well and with the tuning still being tweaked, there is definitely more on the table.

Looking forward to some final numbers and track results.

FYI... Moe has alot left in it.

Some customer references

One of my customers ran 108mph in the 1/8th with only 574rwhp/571rwtq @ 11psi with his TC76 355ci M6 on a mailorder tune

I also had a customer lay down 767rwhp/712rwtq @ 20psi with his T76 383ci M6... those are F-1 blower type numbers for an LTx.

Another customer laid down 645rwhp /627rwtq @ 15psi with his TC76 383ci with a stalled auto.

D1 versus a nice T76.... T76 will win if properly setup.

Keep cranking Moe.

Thanks, will keep you all posted, Now I am finishing up all the odds n ends, as most of you know I had just finished the car the night before the race and the last time I had it on the track was back in 04. I really didn't even think it was going to make it down the track, and with those numbers I'm pleased because as you all say, I know there is a lot more...

way to go moe! I'm sure theres plenty left on the table power wise and that plus some more seat time w/ the turbo and im sure you'll be damn near high 9's.
do you have the dyno graphs of each set up? I would love to see the difference in curves!
