96-97 ram air
Hey anybody know where i can find a real steel 96-97 ram air hood. I have been trying wrecking yards, but when they send me pictures it's the stock hood or it is already sold. I have a fiberglass one that i bought but i dont really like the fit. I am about to paint the car and i want a real steel factory one. Any help would be great thanks.

they actually are composite and yes they are pretty much a direct bolt on. the body shop that installed mine said they had to make no fitment adjustments whatsoever. They may have some steel frame work though. but the oem hood is very light (35lbs?) compared to the steel hood (70?)
My hood was unpainted and never installed on a car when i got it so here is what they looked like from the factory before paint.

did yours break or something? i know mine had to have some repairs to the corners since it stood straight up for a long time and they had to fill a hole in on the hood where the material had spread too thin during production which is why it was a prototype. they made ~ 25 of them and all had the defect so they redid the mold. it's that little black dot in the part of the hood that dips on the drivers side between the main higher level and outer level.

SMC? I bought one off the internet last tax time for 299 plus 150 ship. It fits ok but not well enough to spend 1500 on a paint job. I had it painted single stage black for a 100 bucks at Maaco and its wavy as hell and its got all kinds of bubbles in it. I really was not concerned at the time i just wanted to have the same color on the car not just white. Alot of the rivited mounting points for the bolts have broken and i dont have a lot of them left to bolt to., very unstable. It is to high on the pass side to low around the headlights and so on. I really thought they were steal, but i have the origanal TA hood and i will have it painted at the same time to match, if i want to change it i can if i get bored i can. The rest of the car is urathane and fiberglass i guess it would be good the WS6 could be too. Thanks guys i will see if Maaco can make it work. 750 to paint single stage paint...and 1500 for dual stage...will it be worth the extra money? Can i tell the difference? Thanks

no you won't be able to tell the difference at maaco. Single stage in theory won't last as long as bc/cc.
if you car is a very nice car, with original paint, it may be worth a bodyshop and you'd maybe pay less.
if it's a 10 footer (looks good from 10 feet away) single stage will probably be fine.

FWIW i always thought they were sheet moulded compound or composite or whatever it's called. stronger than fiberglass but just as light. the same stuff Corvettes are actually made of.

The oem WS6 hood is SMC, which Is a type of fiberglass. SMC differs from traditional fiberglass in that it is urethane based, while traditional fiberglass is polyester resin based.
All OEM Fiberglass has been SMC since the late 80's at least.

Most glass hoods need body work before paint My 100 dollar ram air hood needs a crack fixed and a lil smoothin to make it straight But then my 95 will have ram air If it was easy girls would be doin it lol Hell im replacin parts that most people would bondo & go But the car is gettin candy red so its gotta be straight
