Default What cam Setup to choose? (Low Budget)

This is What ive came up with so Far:
CC306, CC Pro Magnum 1.6 Roller Rockers, Comp Cams Replacement Hydraulic roller lifters, Comp Cams beehive ovate springs, and Comp Cams magnum pushrods...With Pacesetter LT Headers. I added up a Total of about $1350

Or

Advanced Induction Basic Cam Kit, which includes Springs, steel lock/keepers, CC steel spring locators, steel viton seals... Also with Pacesetter LT Headers i added up a Total of about $1000

The car is a 95 Z28 M6, all stock other than k&n cold air, And flowmaster muffler.
It will be a daily driver once i get my License.
Goals are: To get into the 12s.
About 380-400 Rwhp (Tuned)

That cc306 really benefits from head work, and most say is to big without head work. Not sure about the ai package

Sorry bud but dont expect to see 380+rwhp cam only. The AI grinds usually put out around ~350 to the wheels thru a 6 speed. 12s arent that hard. My 141k mile LT1 has drag radials, suspension, and bolt ons and ran 12.9 with a not so great 1.9 60ft.

the hotcam can put down a good time with a proper setup. it's pretty popular and very cost efficient, try googling it.

Yeah ive read alittle bit of stuff about them. I just dont want to end wanting to get a bigger cam after getting that one. Im used to my dads vvt3 cammed 2010 which is very lopey at idle.. I do like the prices tho. lol!

600 for that hotcam setup isnt bad. A tad under average. 200$ for cam, 200$ for valvespring kit, 200$ for rockers. You would still need lifters. Most of those can Be closer to 300$ for other good brands/parts, for a little more money you could peice together your own kit that would be a little better if your going to go through the trouble of porting the heads. The lt4hotcam isnt a bad cam but your leaving power on the table when you throw ported heads into the equation.

If your wanting a cam with a choppy idle I would call LE or AI and have them spec you a cam like the hot cam or the cc503.

I ran the hotcam kit for a few years. Im a fan. But you wont get the chopped aggressive idle you want.

The 306 is a pretty large cam. the 503 is a good cam.

I run a budget cam setup in my car and am very happy with the way it performs. Mine consists of custom LE cam, Comp 918 valve springs and steel hardware, GM hotcam Self aligning roller rockers. My setup it held back a little by the 918s and self aligning rockers. I had to keep my lift around .565. Not a huge powerloss and LE told me not to be concerned about it and it would only make up about a .1-1.5 tenths at the track. At the time I already had the springs and roller rockers so it fit in my budget.

If your looking for a Great solid setup I would probably go with a custom cam some here around a 223int/230exh around .600 lift and to get your choppy idle have them put it on a 108-109LSA. Run Patriot gold 8401-bsc springs and the promags/guideplates that you were looking at. Both AI and LE have this type of cam, you could also call Bullet and order one straight from them, tell them the duration and LSA/lift your looking for and let them make the ramp rates.

He is likely a fan because he ran a 12.2 ET with the stock suspension, bolt-ons, and a hotcam kit. Not too shabby

I would think that the best buy for performance would be a Lloyd Elliot "LE1" head and cam package for about $1200. That will get you the cam, springs/retainers/seals, valves and some good porting that can make close to 380-400 RWHP. Stock LS7 lifters for another $125 will also save a few bucks. You're only several hundred dollars from doing it right the first time and that will make it cheaper in the long run.

Later on, if you need more performance, send the heads back to Lloyd for some additional porting to get them to LE2 specs. That's more than enough for most sane people. (But not many of those on this forum) There are also alternatives to the Comp Pro-Mags that are a lot less expensive that will do virtually the same job just as reliably. They Pro-Mags are great but sometimes are an overkill for what is needed.

So for probably around $500 more than your original estimate you can have what you really want. The 306 cam is way too much for stock heads. It doesn't get going until around 3000 RPM and your stock heads quit flowing real well around 5000 or so. 2000 RPM is a pretty narrow powerband.

Right now it seems to me that what you want is a car that sounds badass but it would be better to have a car that is badass. Save a little while longer, learn how to drive on a basically stock vehicle and when you feel comfortable, Let the mods begin. Many young folk have gotten in above their heads on performance before their skills were developed enough to handle it. In my personal opinion there is nothing cool about a car being wrapped around a tree.
