Default What Size Mufflex For ~400rwhp

I'm planning on ordering a mufflex exhaust here pretty soon and was wondering what size pipe to get? I'll be building the y pipe with a flowmaster merge.

Any help is appreciated.

And BTW my main concern is if I can clear a 4" exhaust with my car as low as it is, mostly over the axle is where the clearance is limited

I'd say a 3.5" would be plenty. No need for the 4" on that setup.

Having said that, I'd do a typical 3" with an electric cutout. Makes exhaust routing much easier using a 3", then use the e-cutout to eliminate any exhaust restriction.

This may be a stupid question but are we talking any decent gains with a cutout?

I'd say gains depend on the muffler used.

Ran a few 600+ rwhp cars with the 3.5" exhaust...It more depends on muffler selection. Personally I like the spintech's.

I was thinking about getting the flowmaster muffler, but I like the sound of the spintech, just haven't made up my mind. I was trying to get the setup without a muffler and using a Borla muffler, but never heard an answer back from mufflex.

And I refuse to run a cutout, I hate the sound. Just me, but cutout is not an option

I'm going to be building a new motor in the future and wanted something that would still work, but I think that 3.5" would be good. Especially if you guys were ~600rwhp through a 3.5" I eventually want to be in the ~525 range

So what are you trying to say?? If you don't have any good info how bout you just stay away from the keyboard.

I went from true duals dumped, to true duals over the axle, and now I want something thats going to still sound good and have better clearance than my old duals

Think he's trying to say that 3" would work just fine for that power level.

for 400 hp I would still be looking at a 3" exhaust. Anything more is wasted money. But if you're looking to go to higher power levels you need to go bigger. For 525 3.5" will be more than sufficient and when you get bored leaves a little room to grow. 4" is a waste of money at the levels you're talking about though.

I don't care for the sound of a single 3", its too rappy thats why I'm looking into something bigger. Plus the cost is basically the same for a 3" vs a 3.5"

It's the merge on the y-pipe that makes it raspy not the size of the pipe. 99% of people are running around with shitty merges on their cheap y-pipes that are closer to a t than a y and wondering why their cars sound like ****. I'm running a maganflow merge on my 2otl and it sounds amazing. On my dad's ws6 he has full hooker exhaust from headers to catback and it sounded like ****... raspy all over the place and the ~2500rpm rasp hurt my hears. He had an exhaust shop put in a magnaflow merge and it completely changed the tone of the car. No more rasp and it sounds smooth and mellow. If someone heard the 2 back to back they would think the whole exhaust was swapped out.

Pic of merge. It has to be worth some power over the shitty merges too.

^^^I'm building my y pipe with a dual 3" into a single 3.5" flowmaster merge then the 3.5" mufflex with a Borla muffler

I guess this is the reason I just shy away from the forums anymore

Sounds like a plan, until you start adding alot of nitrous or FI the 3in should carry you a long ways. Lots of good info in these forums, dont let us scare you off

I've been here quite a while, but anymore theres too much bullshit to deal with anymore

Hawks emailed me back and said they would send me the 3.5" kit for the same price as the "sinister" 4" kit, just waiting for a shipping quote now

speed demon is right on about the merge A 3in is good for 450hp & a 3.5in is good for 550 to 600ish But installing an exhaust TOO big HURTS performance more than it helps you If youve got a borla catback youve got one of my top 2 picks for a 3in single So build a better Ypipe with a merge like the picture & be done IF you get to 500+ horsepower then step up to the mufflex system with their Ypipe BUT remember those are made for Hooker Super Comp headers Period Im gonna run the mufflex with a spintec on my 550hp 396 ltx in the 95 ram air ws6 clone im buildin with a 150 or 200 shot of nitrous

No, I'm building a y pipe with dual 3" in/single 3.5" out with a MUFFLEX 3.5" catback with a borla xr1 muffler instead of the spintech/magnaflow/flowmaster muffler that they come with. I already said that I'm NOT using a 3" setup, period, and I'm NOT using a cutout EVER

The setup on my LT1 car is 3in TD into a 3in xpipe with dumped bullets before the axle. That car makes little over 600rwhp on a small nitrous shot. Although I wouldnt suggest this setup for a daily driver, droning will probably drive you crazy, not to mention your neighbors will hate you.

One thing about dealing with these cars, as most of us cant do ALL of it ourselves, we depend on other people (insert dealing with peoples BS here). That alone has about run me into another hobby all together a few times, holding strong. 'See' you around.

My car makes 15 more horsepower with dual open 3" pipes rather then 1 open 3" pipe. Id say 3.5 would be perfect.
