Default And the Fun Begins

Well I got my heads ported by LLoyd and ordered a cam but the parts all sat in my house due to the fact I ran out of money. My wife gave me the fundage needed for Christmas and I finally have all the parts and supplies together to get this thing started this week. This is my first Head/Cam swap on an American car so wish me luck Ladies and Gents.

Congrats! I'm in the middle of my first too! What cam did you go with? I have LE's 226/232.

Mine's close to that. It's an LE custom grind 224/234 .595/.613 on 1.7 rockers. Talking to Lloyd and the homework I've done on this site it should be a pretty good setup with the LE2s.

Congrats man, I just finished my build last week (heads, cam, converter, longtubes, ect) and it was a great feeling when it started. Lloyd talked me into a 228/236 cam on a 110 and it turned out great. Took it out this afternoon and when the converter flashes it is amazing. Lloyd told me it would feel like I was rear ended, he was right.

Just remember to take your time and quit when you get frustrated. I took over a month on mine because I just worked one project at a time (did it all alone). I used a pretty in-depth 12 page guide that can be found pretty easily and the GM manuals, they really helped. I ended up with a few hundred dollars more than I thought I would need in parts. Water pump drive was bad (was good enough reason to go EWP), motor mounts were sagging, broke the knock sensor, throttle cable was broken, and several other things that added up!

Best of luck to you!

not to hi jack his thread but alot of good info in here...

Can you remove the heads without removing long tube headers? obviously loosen the header bolts on the cyl head, but do they need to be removed entirely? Maybe with the collectors undone they would drop enough to get access to the cylinder head bolts? or move far enough towards the fender wells to get to the bolts??

Im thinking of doing heads next but dont want to rip apart every thing, ive had enough fun with headers for the next 2 years.

"technically," you dont have to remove the headers completely off, but i cant see how thats physically possible. Theres very limited room as it is.

I installed my longtubes while the heads were off and then installed the new heads. I have pacesetter longtubes and there was plenty of room to get the bottom bolts on the driverside. The passenger side was considerably tighter but moving it around a little worked fine (this was just to get the torque wrench on straight. It will make cleaning the deck a little harder though.

Thanks for all the well wishes. JCS you brought up a couple things I hadn't even thought of yet. I fully expect to run into a few unexpected expenses. I'm doing the teardown myself but I'll have my buddy gregrob around to coach me through the reassembly so I'm pretty confident. I figure after 10 years of turning wrenches on Air Force aircraft and a few 4 bangers I should be able to handle it. lol

do yourself a favor and just drop the engine out of the bottom of the car if you can. 6 bolts and boom it hits the floor, everything is easily accessable, and there is no fitment/dirt dropped in the oiling system

That is what I should have done but I had just finished redoing my whole AC and refused to break the seal. I still have to replace the motor mounts which could have taken me very little time if I had went this route
