Is it bogging down or blowing black smoke? Check the connection to the MAF is good, and that the connection to the coolant sensor and that the coolant sensor on the waterpump are good.

If your O2 sensors have over 100k on them they should be replaced. As they get old they drift rich. Some people say to lightly tap on the MAF sensor with the engine running, if the engine stumbles the MAF is bad. I've never needed to try this test though so don't know for sure.

my stepfather recommended the maf test and we hit it pretty decent with a flashlight that wasnt the issue. i had a hunch about the 02 sensors are they hard to reach? im gonna see if i can pick 2 bad boys up. would that be the cause of the car stinking like gas and getting horrid mpg?

You hit your MAF with a flashlight?

If the car is throwing a code for the MAF, the problem will probably be MAf related. Does the pigtail connector look to be in decent shape where it makes contact with the connector pins?

Was the code for the MAF the only one it was throwing? I had a problem very similar to yours years back, I put new o2 sensors in, which did nothing. My problem ended up being a bad pigtail on the engine coolant temp sensor in the waterpump.

Don't worry about the coolant light, those sensors are junk. When it overheats, does it blow back out of the overflow tank? Also, I would check out the coolant sensor on the water pump. It is a factor when the computer is determining the AF ratio. I do not know whether OBDI will throw a code for it or not, all I have ever owned is an OBDII car. But if the car is complaining about the MAF, there is probably something going on there.

When you open the gas cap, does it hiss?
Also, is your cat clogged?

Well for one your charcoal canister is clogged or a return line is clogged. It's pretty common since the charcoal cans only have a shelf life of a few years on a DD. You can rather find a gas cap that fits the threading with a vent built into it (since the LT1 cars have a charcoal can they don't have vented caps) or replace the charcoal can... I'd just get a vented cap and see if that fixes it.
Poor fuel mileage can be a bunch of things. What gears do you have? What do your plugs look like? Do you have anyway to read the O2 sensors? How do your O2 sensors look? How does the car idle? Does it feel sluggish/down on power?

An improperly vented system can cause it to run funny but it isn't causing that kind of fuel mileage.

im sure i have either 3.23s or 3.73s i dont think it would cause 8 mpg tho. plugs are brand new forget the brand but they were high performance ones, im looking into the o2s because the readings when i read them werent too consistant, one was reading the normal the other was in a much shorter range (shoulda wrote this down sorry). and the idle on a cold start oil pressure is super high as is voltage until it warms up. then the idle drops so low the car doesnt move unless i give it gas. the volt meter drops and the oil pressure. and its kind of a rough idle.. its hard to explain without seeing but its deffinatly sluggish unless i jump on it.

Change the coolant temp sensor in the water pump. I had the same symptoms, and a Made code, changed the sensor and fixed it,including the MAF code.
