Default Running rich...really rich...

Ok, I am getting very good gas mileage, car runs smooth for the most part. However.... its running pig rich. My clothes always smell like gas/exhaust.. I drove in front of a friend the other day for 1/2 mile and when we stopped he said he could smell gas/strong exhaust fumes... Also on cold start ups I get some minor popping/backfire a few times but quickly goes away.

Car has new plugs and wires and opti. Again, it runs great. No misses or anything.

My MAF is desreaned. This was done before i got the car. I did have the car started and running, and unplugged the MAF. The car did not do anything different at all. The check engine light came on, but when i plugged it back in, the light went off. Im not throwing any codes and dont have a current check engine light.

Does this sound like a obvious MAF issue, or 02 sensor issue, or????

Datalog the car and/or put a wideband on it. Smelling is a very inaccurate way of determining rich or lean.

You say you aren't throwing any codes, but you'll want to scan it anyway, since not all codes set the SES light.

What are the long and short term fuel trims or each O2 sensor/bank???? I was fighting a similar issues, it turned out to be the multec injectors, replaced them...improved quite a bit.

Because of the shift from OBDI to OBDII in the mid 90s and since an OBDI PCM hasn't been produced since 1995 I would expect OBDI scanners to eventually become obsolete and only available at dealers and such. In this day and age if you're going to own an OBDI vehicle and work on it yourself regularly you need to acquire a laptop, cable, and software to do it yourself or else you're just going to go around in circles like you likely are. With how cheap (and free) it is to acquire such a setup it just makes sense.

A red brick scanner will do both and more, those things will not go obsolete in a long time.

I understand that, but for the home backyard mechanic, a $50 cable and a laptop computer can far outperform the small box units anyway you cut it.

Don't want to steal your thread but I have the same problem. I didn't experience any issues until I took the catalytic converters out and swapped in the custom y-pipe. It smells just like my Pop's 65 corvette. I think its just the nature of running a catless exhaust system.

But I have a cat... unless it for some reason is not doing its job, but if that was the case wouldnt I have the typical clogged cat symptoms?

And, no one commented on my MAF not making any kind of difference at all when I unplug it other then turning the SES light on. Car doesnt sputter/bog/stall nothing. runs exactly the same plugged in, or unplugged.

Hopefully that means the VE tables are dead on....
I personnally use Datamaster, it may cost after youre free 20 logs, but it is really worth it. You'll need a laptop and a cable with it as well.

Having the same prob. My gf won't even ride in the car with me! I have changed the o2 sensors and it didn't make any difference.
