No i am running a stock balancer. Can't afford $300 for a damper yet.

Are the threads on the Eagle cranks the same as the stock crank?

As stated, there is no heavy side on a LT1 damper therefore it is not necessary to put the damper on a certain way.

Some may have come with weights added to them (check the little holes in the stock damper). Plus, there is a TDC arrow on them that is helpful in determining crank position. Reason enough for me to install it as the factory manual recommends.

I don't think there's any way GM would use a damper as a balancer without a key. Seems it would put the in the liable hot seat in no time. I've always been of the opinion those holes are there to zero balance the damper itself. I dunno... I've never read or heard of anyone claiming their engine was out of balance because they did not put a keyless damper on wrong.

Just saying that the factory manual says to install it at TDC, because there might have been weights added at the factory for balance. It says if there was, there could be a vibration if not installed as it came off. Most probably had no weights. So, I guess they would do it, even without a key.

IDK. If my LT1 dies, I might consider a transplant or perhaps it will be in a Corvette.

I had in my hand an LT1 press on hub (at my engine bulder's location) which was different than my original unit (which I re-used) as it had weight removed from it via holes drilled into the hub inself. Not thru holes, but rather holes in the outside diameter of the piece in front of the front main seal - I thought it was quite odd...

Also MY LT1's dampener / balancer has 'balance' holes drilled in the back of the unit in-between where it bolts to the hub where the serpintine belt rides; again, NOT thru holes, but rather holes which seem to indicate the removal of material simply for balancing the rotating assy.

Also, when I disassembled each motor, both crankshafts did indeed have keyways cut into them, but neither had keys installed, nor did either of the hubs have provisions for keys. The press / interference fit, and the torque on the center bolt (74 ft lbs) was all that was keeping the hub in proper orientation.

So without the keyway, if lets say a supercharger were added, would a pin or key be needed?

Most people would say so.

Perfectly normal for all stock LT1s.

Did you have those spun to see if they had a heavy side?

There is no reason to drill any sort of holes into a crank hub to balance the engine. Makes no sense. I have a hard time believing it came from the factory like that.

Most LT1 hubs have a few drill dots in them from being balanced by it's maker. They are zero or neutral balanced.
