OP, you still have to get studs for use with guide plates. Your stock studs only have about 6 threads on them. Using guide plates take away about 3 threads. So then you must have the correct studs to make up for the plates.
But if not planning on turning high rpms, stay SA. A good SA rocker will hold up fine.

Standard length ARP small block Chevy studs will do you fine.
Why are you so set on a 3/8" stud? 7/16" studs and rockers are very similar if not exactly the same price and they make for a more stable valvetrain.

You don't have to use narrow body rockers.....trim your valve covers and the regular ones will fit fine. Shbox.com has pics on his site of where to trim them. (Also plenty of info on cam swaps, rocker adjustment, etc.) If you haven't bought rockers yet, I'd go 7/16". Either use the TrickFlow guideplates that RamAir mentioned, or use GM ones. Most other brands have incorrect spacing for LT1's. Use flat guideplates. You don't have to do any machining on aluminum LT1 heads.
Like someone else said....the lower threads on the stock 3/8" studs are too short when using guideplates.

sucks when you ask questions and then don't like the answers so most of the knowledgable folks give up on you. Just about everyone in this thread knew about trimming the valvecovers for standard body rockers, you just didn't want to hear anything that was not the answer you were looking for and they gave up on you.

Stud girdle, not cradle, and no there is no need for one until the camshaft is fairly large. Besides they require perimeter bolt valvecovers.
