Default Cat testing

Hey I'm not sure but I've been talking to a buddy of mine at work (he has a ls1 camaro) and he said the ticking I've been hearing when the car is warm and under load (cruise or wot though I can't hear it over the exhaust at wot) could very well be the catalytic converter on its last legs.

Any way to test this theory or just replacement the only way?
It's a single cat 95 with 80,000km, 45000ish miles

Just ram a rod through the cat and be done with it.

Cats will ratttle...don't know about ticking. Often ticking is an exhaust leak (especially when under a load).

Would you say for it to tick (as opposed to it being really loud fart sound) that it would have to be fairly close if not right at the head?

Yes, closer to the head/exhaust manifold is generally where you would hear it.

You can test the cat for being clogged with a back pressure gauge. It screws into the o2 sensor bung. take a before and after cat reading.

Like said above a tick is more like an exh. leak. normally at the manifold gasket or collector gaskets.

Hey:

Depending on your emissions you could go with one of these if you only have a visual inspection.

That should help with the flow and get rid of the rattle.
