Rear end knocking sound 1997 SS
Anyone know what causes this problem? The car has made this noise for as long as i can remember but I know it's not right. I've read about "auburn rear ends" having a similar problem in the past but never really pursued it because my other 1997 A4 SS didn't have the problem and neither did my 96Z/M6.
Anyone know what this might be? It only occurs when I’m coasting.

Is the rear lube low, when was the last time it was changes, also do you have the Torsen diff or a limited slip? If it's a limited slip then change the gear lube and add the limited slip additive.

What weight of diff fluid does it use? I'm hoping I can use some Mobil 75W-140 or 75W-90
I doubt it's a suspension peice, it has a rotational sound to it. You know?

It could be a Torsen carrier as well. Clunking could also be worn bushings on the lower control arms. Do you know if the SS has Level II suspension?
Just read you state it is a "rotational sound..." If that is what I think it means you could also have a loose pinion shaft which causes there to be too much play between the ring and pinion gear. When there is slack in the drivetrain is when you would hear it the most.

Level II then you shouldn't have to worry about bushings really ever since the important pieces are poly. As far as the pinion is concerned you can take the driveshaft off and see if there is any thrust play. Other than that I have no idea where to go from there.

My car makes a "BANG" in the rear sometimes when it shifts into 2nd only when driving it normal. I don't get it..

Try a driveline shop (or 2)? Usually diagnose is free. Its rather hard to diagnose something like that over the internet where driveline shops do it all day long. Dealer can also but will charge $100 min fee and not nearly as good at the driveline.
Bryant is so close to Little Rock i cant imagine no driveline shops nearby.

Not to hijack the OPs thread but the cluck when moved into gear on mine was a missing trans mount bolt and the other lose.

I may give that a shot, really not sure what it is. It's been making this noise for as long as i can remember?
Does anyone know what weight of gear lube needs to be in the diff?
