Default Help!!! Engine Noise

Picked the car up cheap ran great for a while, I know it has an exhaust leak.

Background, on the way home from my parents house on christmas it died pulling into my driveway and wouldn't restart. Acted like the battery/alt took a dump. Well car sat for a while after making a horrifying noise upon jump starting.

So now here is my noise with the valve cover off.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j10_1...ature=youtu.be

No picture to the video guess it decided to not upload all the way.

Please any and all ideas.

If it is considered to be needing a rebuild, please feel free to link me some reliable rebuild kits.

Is every rocker moving? It's pretty intermittent for a rod knock but has that distinct terrible sound.

I think the sound would be a little more consistent if it was something in the valvetrain. Sounds like a rod knock or wrist pin. Whatever it is it doesn't sound good.

Sounds like valvetrain to me. Something in the bottom end like a rod knock would be a much deeper "clunk clunk" noise.
Have you looked closely at the springs/retainers/rockers for damage?
As you're rotaing the engine by hand, grab each rocker and try to wiggle it; maybe you'll find the offending one.

Sounds too deep to be valvetrain. When it's revved and there's load on the rotating assy. it seems as though the knock is not there, but comes back once the engine decelerates, which can be signs of a rod knock. Regardless, IMO it sounds like it cannot be fixed without taking the engine apart. Does it do this when the engine is warm? If not, it could be a carbon knock and you may be able to clear it up by using seafoam.

It does it when cold or hot. It's so spontaneous that I can't pick up what it's doing it with.

Well I guess my next step would to be verify if rod or not. Gues it's time to pull the pan. Thanks guys.

Check the oil and oil filter. If you find shiny **** that would be rebuild or junkyard time.

Rebuild is the option, no junk yard for this TA. Already saved it from that fate once.

well figured i would keep this updated, Haven't gotten a chance to have the car towed from my Dad's place to the garage so no update as far as the motor condition or anything goes. I did end up picking up a paint matching door over the weekend but made a complete noob mistake. It was off a camaro and not trans am so it has the camaro line going diagnal up it. (facepalm) so now I am stuck with it.

Still in search for another door....

also another piece of info on the noise, oil pressure was completely normal.

In the video I see the rocker arms seem to stop moving for a bit.

What I actually meant was junkyard engine not to scrap the car lol. Copper bits = no good.

yea, i am searching the hell out of craigslist and local yards for a good donor. I'm just not sure if I wanna dump 500 bucks on a junk yard motor and have it grenade a year later. Or just get a fresh rebuild for 1000 and be good to go.
