Default 1996 z28 exhaust cutout!

Hi guys I was wondering if someone could help pick out and help me with placement of an exhaust cut out on my 1996 z28 I have a factory y pipe with hollowed cats and a factory cat back. I do have pacesetter shortie headers. I am spraying the car with a 125 shot and have a 3200 stall converter with 3.42 gears. That's about all that's done to the car and I am trying to break in to the 11s on my street tires. I ran. 12.03 at 114 mph. Will an exhaust cutout get me any gains at the track? If I do get one what size do I need and how do I install it. I don't what and electric cutout because I want to do this for cheep. I think factory exhaust is 2.75in am I right. I was thinking about putting the cut out right in front of the hump for the rear axle. Can I clamp the cutout in because I don't have a welder and want to do this for cheep. Thanks and sorry for the long post

All of the F-Bodies I have had I have put a 3" cutout right before the bend in the pipe before it goes over the rear axle. Get it welded in, don't cheap out with clamps. My shop would charge between $20-$30 to get them put on.

If I do it I will probably get stainless. I just don't know if I am going to get it yet because I only want it if it will get me into the 11s or give me some sore of gain. Have any of you guys got a noticeable gain with the cutout at the track? Thanks

The search feature is your friend. Embrace it, whisper sweet nothings into its ear and maybe it will open up its secrets to you. I just did and it was very generous, look at one of the first posts it gave me:

I put my cutout on my 93 Z28 on the I-pipe, right after it comes over the axle, in the bend before it turns in to the muffler. Being at the rear made it easy to reach, and just open and close by hand with a few wing nuts.

This is basically how it was set up

I tucked mine up in the hump where the rear seat is. It's a convenient place and lots of people put it there.

Here's a decent picture of it. (electric with a turndown)

I don't see much to be gained from putting the cutout right before the muffler under the trunk. If you see gains from a cutout there, it seems to me that your muffler is too restrictive.

If you place it in the I pipe before the axle I could understand STARTING to see gains due to not having the exhaust go up and over the axle.

I also can't see a L/T/catless LT! car sounding good with a cutout right before the muffler. I have Borla adjustable catback pipes on my 95 and tried the exhaust with the passenger side fully open...Sounded like a farm truck with horrible popping exhaust pulses. It's not a street friendly exhaust to me. If it's a drag strip where you are always WOT, it may sound "good".
