Default MAF Malfunction on a '96 Trans Am

How do you check the MAF when it's not connected to the sensor? I'm just trying to buy a new one & not waste $$$ on it. Ive already bought a new MAF off a guy on Craigslist & plugged it up but my p0100 pops up a second later after trying to delete the codes. Any ideas? I tried looking over the pigtail sensor that connects to the MAF but it reads normal volts. Trying to pass smog but I just can't get the code to go away. I'm on my second MAF and don't wanna waste money on a new MAF. Thank you! (96 Trans Am A4)

There's a fuse in the fuse block under hood. My 96 threw that code when that fuse popped. It was called engine sensor fuse IIRC. Check that.

I know you said in the fuse box, but I don't see any fuse called IIRC.

Kinda funny but I remember the first time I saw IIRC used. I was so confused I spent like 20 mins trying to figure it out.

if you manage to plug the MAF plug in backwards...it will also throw the 100 code

simple check to find out if fuse checks out

Ok, I followed the instructions from what the problem was. I went to autozone an hour ago and I bought the 20AMPS fuse. Put it on, and nothing made a difference. I tried deleting the codes and comes on a split second later. I'll see if i put on the pigtail wire wrong (I doubt it but's worth a shot.) This started happening when I put on my nitrous elbow. Any thing else you guys can recommend?

I don't know what parts store you have locally, but I think o'reilly can test the MAF. It might be worth it to call around and ask.

Did you check to see if you have power at the MAF?

I haven't yet to be honest. The new MAF didn't make a difference either when i put it on. I checked to make sure the sensor was on correctly, I checked the fuses for the 20AMPs and didn't make a difference. Checked the pigtail sensor and it reads normal volts. I plugged in the scanner and I checked the MAF based on how I rev the engine, and on the scanner it doesn't move from 0.1 (From what I remember)
