Default Electric Water Pump

What is the average life of an electric water pump? I have a mezierre on right now, its been on for almost 8yrs.

Also, do these just stop working or do they also deteriorate like the mechanical pumps?

thanks.

16 years

they are an electric motor so if they fail I suspect it would be immediate.....but there is a temp gauge.

I carry a spare I bought 10 years ago in the trunk as the swap would take 10 min if it does fail (like any WP it eventually will).

For me, the EWP has FAR outlasted a mechanical. I only had AC Delco WP's when I did have the mechanical, they just never lasted. Leaked on Opti's..

9 years and 60k miles of surviving the Florida heat, well past the 2500+ hour life expectancy and a couple major electrical gremlins. Still whisper quiet operation. It will be retired later this year (on MY terms) now that everything else has been resolved. A friend of mine got about the same amount of time (8 years I think) but way more run time with the same weather conditions minus the electrical problems.

As far as failure... my only warning sign (different car running a different pump) was the harness getting really hot before it started blowing fuses.

I've had a meziere for 7 years now. Only issue I had was a seal drying up. Sent it back and it was rebuilt for a flat rate of $100. This was about 4 years ago. I've often wondered if I should buy a second one to keep in the car...

back 12 maybe 14 years ago when I had at the time about 4 years on my Meziere I also thought, and did, get a spare to keep in the trunk. More because a local auto part store would not have one and if the WP ever did fail (and it like any WP eventually will) I could quickly replace it. Even on the side of the road if needed

16 years now and the spare EWP is still in the trunk.....but at some point will trade places with the one on the motor and when that time comes the failed EWP will go back to Meziere for a $100 rebuild and it will live in the trunk.

For me the original purpose was to replace the mechanical that constantly leaked out of weep hole and killed optis under warranty. when car went out of warranty I went EWP and have since never killed a opti from coolant exposure.

YMMV

thanks for the replies, I do have a back-up EWP. I was wondering because here the summers are a bit hot and don't want to have to replace it then, rather replace it now if its at the end of its life.

the car was running hot yesterday, and was wondering if the EWP was going out.. I checked the pump, its still working, water flows in the radiator. Going to flush the coolant and see if that was the issue. coolant was a bit brown.

Another good point is to just park the car and have it rebuilt.... not a bad idea....

no issues with opti here either, I have the MSD cap on stock opti, just make sure the O-ring seats correctly and put locktite on the screws.

How often do you flush/replace coolant?

depends on what type you use, green or dexcool. If your coolant is brown...it needs changing whatever color it was and your cooling system needs flushing

green coolant is typically 24 month/24k mi
Dexcool (orange) supposedly lasts 100k mi...but I would change it at 50k mi max
