Duals sound great but not fun on a street car unless you spend the time/money to run them out the back.
With dumped duals ground clearance is usually pretty bad unless you run bullets, and then your interior noise gets pretty rough. Also unless you have all the suspension components put on the car you plan on adding you might run into issues later.
Both systems will work relatively equally performance wise for most builds. If you think a 3" single pipe system might limit you later on there are 4" setups available.

I think it all depends on your power level. A stockish car probably won't benefit by having say a dual 3" setup vs a full single 3" setup whereas a stroker motor would. But like stated above, there's also single 3.5" and 4" setups available.
IMO LS1 fbodies need TD's to sound good but LT1's do not so from a sound standpoint I think both sound good just kind of a preference to which you may like more. I have an x-pipe dumped at the axle with dynomax bullets. It was really cool when I was 20 years old and it sounds pretty crazy and is very unique but it's a little loud when the wife and I go cruising so that's why my Vette is quieter, best of both worlds. Lots to think about, good luck.

In my opinion there is no comparison between a Y setup and a TD setup in terms of sound. You will gain a marginal amount of power with a tune from either setup but you stand to gain more from a TD setup and again, the sound is incomparable and in many cases far louder than Y setup which does make it the more aggressive of the two options.
