Default 97 LT1 what coolant

Sorry if this is the wrong spot its not really modification i dont think,
Anyway.

For a 1997 LT1 what coolant goes into it, when i bought it used it came with green coolant, i drained the rad every year after winter storage, and every year the bottom few inches were nasty, that got me wondering in 97 wasnt GM already switched to Dex cool?

so i flushed the whole system, multiple times with clean water, then pulled the block drains,
Should i refill it with the "green" stuff that came out or go with the dex cool?

OR,, (lol)
is anyone running the stuff thats made by Shell, its red, its used in heavy equipment and is good for a crazy amount of time (not sure if a car is the same) Its called shell rotella ELC or something

Thank you,
Dave

I put in the 50/50 premixed green stuff in mine. No problems here. I would stick with the green

Just run green. It's cheaper. The gunk could have been when the previous owner switched it was not flushed thoroughly enough.

I would run pre-mixed dex-cool actually. That's what the manual calls for

It would have come with Dex-cool, but since you have the green in it now, I would stay with that.

That's because it came with it from the factory. Only difference between orange and green is the claim that orange lasts longer.

Whichever coolant you do decide to use, if you want to save $$$ you can do what I do...I buy jugs of straight coolant and jugs of distilled water instead of the jugs of premixed 50/50 coolant/water. Just mix equal parts of each together in separate containers or poor in equal amounts of both.

In 1996 GM went to a 5 yr/100k mi major service interval for its cars. Dexcool will last that long...but the problem was GM put anti leak pellets in the cooling system new and it was found Dexcool reacted to those and became a brown sludge clogging radiators and heater cores way before 100k mi

you don't want to switch from orange to green, or vice versa, without completely flushing system as the two don't mix well.

Nothing wrong with using Dexcool if your system has been purged from the factory fill that had stop leak pellets in it.

I use green and buy distilled water to make my 50/50 mix

Prestone has a 50/50 mix that will work with either green or dex-cool. If I were interested in switching it, I think I'd go with that first, then after running it for a while, flush it out, and go green.

I still use dex-cool and the sealing pellets in my Z28. Can't say I've had any problems in around 20 years with it. Where I have seen issues with dex-cool is when air gets introduced into the system. I'm not sure why, but it does seem to turn into a big mess when big air pockets get into the system. Might be due to the pellet material reacting to the air.

I've been running Dexcool since the car was new. No issues with the cooling system in 182K miles...

Dexcool is fine. But must be changed every 3 years. It will start to gel up after that. I just use Green 50/50 mix from harbor freight. $7 a jug. What goes into all my cars.

When I flushed my engine I found a lot of residual gunk in the front of the engine block that just draining the block didn't touch. Already having the radiator hoses off I pulled out the water coolent plugs located down on the block where the knock sensor(s) go, used a pressure nipple on the end of the water hose and just got gungy with it. Flushing the block backwards and forwards, with the engine running and off. It was a messy and water logging project but the block was cleaner I figured.
The brown pellets GM suggests are ground up walnut shells. They work find at sealing until they don't, just like any other sealer. My overflow tank is tainted brown despite the green anti-freeze I use. I only have 10 or 12k on the motor but no leaks so its all good I guess.
