Jon, if the bolts are long enough you can sometimes use some lock washers to help prevent the bolts from backing out. Have you had any luck with getting the leak stopped?

Also went back and found this pic of the header. Are those scratches maybe my issue? Typo in first post. Bought these used not new

I had a flange that was bent. the tuner used 2 metal gaskets and it's now fixed

Does not appear bent from what I can see, but I have some choice words for the shop that said it was all fixed. Lasted 5 miles.

Percys dead soft gaskets worked wonders on my setup, spray em down with copper rtv then install em.

I’d say check the flange with a straight edge but I know you really don’t want to pull the headers completely out. If you do pull it the area where it’s leaking should be obvious. Check it with a straight edge and find out if it’s high or low in that area and try to straighten it if possible. Header leaks do suck man, I can’t say I’ve ever had as much trouble as you’re having.

not what I would call a "smooth" finish. The FelPro 1470 have always worked for me but you could try, since the FelPro didn't work for you, the ones AtlantaDan notes. Might want to hit the flange with a long sanding block to smooth it out...assuming the flange is not warped

Your advice has always been spot on. What’s the difference between Fel Pro 1406 and 1470? Also I’ve seen people recommend the Remflex 2022 vs the 2042. I want to try remflex last as I read once they are on, they leave quite the mess that has to be scraped off. Gonna call the shop tomorrow to see what they will do. Also supposed to get 4-6” of snow so....anyone wanna buy a car lol?

The 1470 is for LT1/4 "D" port heads. The 1406 are Gen 1 SBC D port...I have always used the 1470's on my LT1.

I have never had any luck with copper gaskets and never used the Remflex so can't speak one way or the other about them. Atlanta has been around the block so if he feels they are good they should be. With that said I use the FelPro 1470...but any gasket is not going to work if the flange is warped/ Holding a straight edge on the flange and running a flashlight behind the straight edge to see if the mating point of the straight edge on flange reveals low spots is something you might want to do if the header can come off enough to allow you to check that.

If you are having someone install these than you should re-tighten them after a couple of heat cycles. I use the box wrench with another box wrench wedged on it to add leverage.

Well I have an email into Remflex. Going to start with shop, I checked for tightness after the 12 minute drive home and they were still tight. If they don’t fix it, its gonna take a 5 month winter slumber before I mess with it again

Well in case anyone was wondering, Lloyd Elliott matches the exhaust side of things to a Fel-Pro 1406. So got that part right so far.

They do leave a bit of a mess, but its nothing that is difficult to remove. You can use a plastic edge scraper and it comes off with zero effort. Be careful with them during handling. I've never broken one before install, but I can see how it would happen.
