Default Remote mount turbo project

Here are some pics of my current project. I ran it a bit in the fall before the snow flew and it seems to boost up pretty quickly. Still some things to do but its getting there.

If you can, probably be wise to move the gate to the elbow right before the turbo.

I ran a setup like that one time. The reason I run two gates is because of how I set these up. I found when i did it the way you are suggesting in the past on a rearmount setup I had to run a crazy high spring pressure in it to keep it from opening to early. With that said I also ran a smaller a/r on the turbine at that time. This seems to work better overall in this setup.

I took the car out for a quick drive today to burn in the exhaust wrap I recently put on. It felt really strange and doggy. The car made no boost at all. I got it home and check for lines that maybe popped off. I pulled the air filter on the turbo and the wheel is completely frozen stiff. I'm betting a bearing failed. Whats weird and sad about this is this turbo doesn't even has 100miles on it and it has plenty of oil going to it. It boost great in the fall when I put it away. I know its a cheap turbo and I've used cheap turbos before but wow this is really disappointing on how sort lived this one was. At least it was cheap!

just an update I told maxpeeding rods what had happened and after a few pics they sent me a new turbo. Great customer service. Based on how I was treated I'd say the service is as good or better than any automotive companies I've dealt with

well they are cheap turbos. Maybe I got a bad one. That does happen even with brand name ones from time to time. Once I get it sorted out I may switch to a turbonetics or precision but if this works good ill keep it. There are tons of people running them and are quite happy just have to know its not like your going to go win drag week with one. Keep boost reasonable and it may last. Again its cheap. I can get about 3 of them for the price of name brand one.

Youre more brave than I. What size turbo? That intercooler setup, did you ever scan for temp readings? I'm trying to picture the angle you could max tilt it for best cooling. But that location wouldnt work here in PHX. Where are you located?

the turbo is a 67/75. If I remember correctly but I could be off on that without having it directly in front of me. Ya in Phoenix that might not work with an air to air. However in Alberta where it rarely hits 35c in summer I'm not to worried. I only ran this a bit in the fall before we got 3 feet of snow on the ground so I haven't data looked at all yet.

Default Update

I got all the fuel pump stuff in and Wideband. I upped the boost to about 6 to 7 psi boost. There is basically no lag. I'm seeing significant spool by 3500rpm. The car will blow the tires off rolling into it at 100kph. It's a ton of fun and very drivable. I'm seeing about 11.3 afrs in boost. I could up it a few pounds yet before I need to change injectors and may do that yet but for now it's good. I. Pretty happy with what I spent, the performance and the fact I didn't really have to do any permanent mods on the car.

I helped a friend install an STS kit on his 02 Camaro SS. The sounds it made were amazing however did not produce much boost at all until upper mid-range to redline. For the sound I say its great but otherwise its a lot of pluming and low clearance issues. I remember the oil return pump let go and smoked the turbo and he ended up losing all interest in it. I'm sure they have come along way though as this was like 14 years ago.

I built mine. I have a backup oil pump to avoid what you are talking about also ive seen the sts systems and improved on a few things i saw from them like the oil sump off the turbo

Im going to go out on a limb and guess his motor was stock? Because to get the turbo to work at its max potential the LT1 has to be built. The misconception at the time of the sts back then was it was advertised as a bolt on kit and several people ( more so the twin turbo'ed vetts) were sadly disappointed at the performance on bone stock engines. Although, i had to get my old 95Firehawks motor built to break 500+ in Vegas in a 100deg garage at 10lbs where my friends SS'camaro only needed a cam with the same turbo specs. At sea level and 18lbs it was pushing about 580rw... oh those were the days

I think the sts system has to small of a turbine and it chokes out a v8 engine. I find sizing the turbine the same and managing heat works well. I lose maybe 500rpm of spool. Big deal. It's not what I would call laggy. Could likely improve spool response with ball bearing. I like the robustness of journal bearing for a street car. This gt45 i have works well.
