Default 383 Stroker guys please come in.

Hey guys what's up? I need your help, this winter I'm planning on yanking my 1993 LT1 out and turning it into a 383 stroker. I've found a local guy that is going to do it and he seems to know his stuff. I've seen a 383 supercharged vette he did and it is sweet.

I'm going with the Callies forged rotating assmebly or the Eagle rotating assembly have'nt decided yet ,Ported stock or LT4 Heads maybe AFR heads if needed , SRP/JE Pistons , Canton oil pan , GM847 or CC306 not sure yet, maybe a custom grind might be in order. Worked 4l60 Trans w/ shift kit and 3000 stall converter , Moser 12-bolt rear, BMR K-Member , Upper and Lower A-Arms , Panhord bar , Control arms , QA1 Adjustable shocks front and rear, Mac Mid length headers and y-pipe , SLP Loudmouth exhaust. I'm sure I'm gonna need some drag radial tires also. I'm getting it tuned by a local guy who knows his stuff.

I have a few questions for you guys, hopefully you can shed some light on the issues for me.

1) Are the GM847 and CC306 cams able to be made emissions captiable? I still have to pass emissions (I HATE VIRGINIA!!!!....lol). If not can I get two chips burned one for emissions and one for after emissions (the fun chip...lol). I have a 93 so I have the removeable chips. If the GM847 or CC306 are out of the question could you guys recommend something else. I want that nasty lope sound and I'm looking for 470-480 at the wheels. OH! and I'm gonna throw some nitrous to it as well, a 150 or 175 shot at the most.

2) Do you think that my Mac mid length headers will do or should I get some long tube headers? I saw that jet hot made long tubes for the LT1 that are emissions capitable and I found a place that will make me a Y-pipe that has a Cat for emissions purposes. What do you think?

3) What is your opinion on the heads? Should I go with stock or LT4 Ported heads, or go with AFR's? I heard that you can get close to AFR with stock castings but I want to know if there is truth to this. I heard about Llyod Elliot but I also heard that his Mom is real sick and he is not doing anymore heads. Just give more your opinion on which route you would take.

Alright guys thats it, sorry about the long post but I'm just trying to get some info , I'm sure you understand. I'm hoping somebody here can help me out with these questions. I just want to know what I'm getting into before I start , Thanks in advance.

MAC's are good, but they aint gonna cut it, your gonna need longtubes, ORYP, and cut-out/awesome catback. If you go with the LT4 heads, your gonna need the intake as well. If your looking for 470-480 at the wheels, I would go with AFR's and have them ported, ask around and get a custom grind camshaft. It will be hard to get the 306 or 847 to pass emissions, might have to put a cat right up next to the primaries to burn better, and een then its a tuning issue like you mentioned.

a 306 or 847 will not get you to 470-480 at the wheels. honestly i would go with the AFRs or the LT4s. but they both will need to be worked beyond how they arrive. well the street port availible from AFR is pretty damn good, but theres still more there to gain. you will need a second chip to pass emissions, and even then im not sure if you can do it. you will prolly be giving up a lot to make the engine emmisions legal, but im not sure how strict virginia is, im assuming very.

You definitly don't have a small task ahead of you. I also have a 93', and built a 383 for it...Eagle 4340 crank, H-beam rods, SRP-JE pistons, ported Lt1 heads, stock valve size (stainless) comp 503 (I orginally wanted the 306 but got the 503...224/230). I had the computer programed for the 306 (cuz I thought thats what it was going to have in it), and had 42lbs injectors with 2.73 gears, but it still ran a 13.4, 2.4 60's. I put 3.73's in it, and she ran a 12.8 112mph, definitly a low 12's engine...with the wrong tune, rich as hell, and a vibration that eventually led to, the engine I'm building now. It prolly had about 300-325 at the wheels. He didn't balance the kit, so now I'm putting a custom grind 236/245 lsa 115 cam, the right tune, on a balanced motor, through mildly ported heads, hopefully put 350+ to the wheels. You definelty will need some amazing heads to acheive those goals. Maybe bring it down to 400-450. a 236 duration cam should get it with a good set of heads, and a good tune, through some cut outs. Then close it up, change to your very lean programmed chip and you should get it.

Look if you the afr's 210's and the cc306 you will reach your hp goal. But if your gonna get awsome heads like them get a custom and you will reach more hp then you want. Me i bought the trick flow's and had them full cnc ported and they flow just as good and cost me $600 for the porting and $1400 for the heads. Go long tubes and no long tubes are emmisions legal they move the cat further back on the car which is ilegal. I would go x-pipe not y-pipe for more torque. Moser 9" is indestructable the 12" can be broken. Got to watch which splen you get the more splen the more drag. I dunno about the chip thing my cars a 94'. Also when you do a project like this always expect to end up paying more then what you thought. YOu got any more questions just p.m. me. Good like

I would find someone who knows what they are doing and have them spec the complete motor for you. Couple reasons:

You might feel the urge to get involved, but you're only going to get in the way. Find someone that HAS made the power you're looking for and have them reproduce it. Just dumping your parts off to someone and holding them responsible for the power output is not very fair.

You WILL save money by paying up front and not nickel and diming things here and there.

I kept my LT1 heads (budget) but had my engine builder spec the cam and valvetrain (along with the shortblock, obviously) for me. I told him my priorities and my goals and he said "ok" . Time will tell what the car will make, but looking for around 450rwhp NA.
