Allright and please pardon my ignorance. How do I really know if it's the opti going out on my 93 Z or not. I have a Jacobs Coil installed probably in 94 or 95. (I bought the car second hand) I replaced the spark plugs & wires 1 1/2 years ago. My car has 130K on it now, and here is what it does. Car runs great until it warms up. Then starts to really miss-fire and the tach goes crazy, almost bouncing at times. Car surges and so on. It will still smoke the tires at times. It seems like the problem is interrmittent. It is driving me nuts and I don't want to throw away any $$$$$. I am really short on cash.

Sounds like your O2 sensors may need to be replaced. If you don't know how old they are, they may be original, and probably need to be replaced. O2 sensors are commonly overlooked during regular maintenance/tune ups.

Any SES lights? Try getting a scan done.

I have 111,000 miles on my 96 TA and I still have the original opti. I think that I'll probably buy the MSD Kit because I seem to have a dead spot between 1500 and 2000 Rpms. Any suggestions of what this might be?

Thanks! I did the 02's last year. No SES lights. Think I am going to take it to a dealer or someone who can run a full diagnostic check. Hopefully that will tell me the exact problem.. I know it is either the Ignition Control Module, The Opti-spark, or the ECM. I am suspicious of the Spark Plug wires, but I did replace them about a year ago.. Went back with Stock GM and know now that was a mistake. I have a problem trusting most mechanics and prefer to do the work myself.

Sounds like there are a few lucky ones on here. My '94 Z28 has 68K miles. Yes, not a typo, 68K. Granted, many were put on a quarter mile at a time. Guess which opti I am on right now? NUMBER THREE. Yes, 3 opti's in 68K miles and this one is starting to stumble. It threw the opti code, so I know it was to blame for the stumble.

The opti truly is a POS in my experience. I think a few of us were just lucky.

AFAIK my opti is stock. I've had the car since it had 63k on it and it now has 156k. I've never changed the opti.

I'm also using the stock coil and plug wires.

I know it needs new wires...

Man, I already forgot. I do remember it was either the "low-res" or "high-res" code for the Opti. You bring up a good point about making sure if it's 16 or not. I'll have to pull the stored code and re-check. Thanks.

I'm pushing 96,000 on my 97 T/A with no problems from the ignition sys. The cooling sys on the other hand is a POS.
