Default cats

im going to just put an exhaust on my car no headers for a while but was wondering should i take my cats off and what has to be done when doing that? will it throw a code and will it hurt it to have the code? also will there be any loss of mpg and about how much if any? im going to be putting on a magnaflow muffler and a cutout...car sees ~35000mile per year so gas is a factor

Not cat won't throw a code. Unles you have a dual cat system which were 95-96 CA cars, or all 97s, i dont see it being a problem to remove. You won't lose any MPG, you might even gain some. You may have a two 02 sensor system with your 96. I'm not entirely sure on the years, but you probably do. It has 02 sensors both before and after the cat, which could possibly throw a code, though i doubt it. I have no cat (or exhaust for that matter) on my 95 Firebird, didn't lose any MPG, your car will be noticeably louder, but mine didnt throw any codes.

You can try leaving them hanging, but it will likely throw a code since the voltage will probably get all screwed up.

You may lose MPG with 02 sims. The 02 are put there for Emmissions, I.E MPG. The lower your emmissions usually the more efficient your engine, which means better gas mileage.

I'm not exactly sure on what you should do with them, i guess get 02 sims, but i would not leave them hanging. Your engine will not run right in closed loop.

get the 02 sims, the rear o2's are there for monitoring how effective the cats are,not a mpg effecting duty.

It looks like Average Joe's is going to forfeit.

It's a bold move Cotton, let's see if it pays off.
