Default Cam choice for A4, stock heads, 6500 shifts

Well,

I'm thinking about getting a cam this spring.

Car is a 1996 Trans Am
automatic, 2800 stall, 373's, longtubes, 3 inch exhaust, basicly all of the bolt-ons. It will be going on a diet soon and lose AC and receive a Madman rack and BMR k-member and lighter seats later on.

The car is not a daily driver and isn't being smogged at this time.
It'll probably be a 50/50 street/strip car.

The heads will be untouched for now, but I might get some ported LT4's when I graduate next year if funds permit. I don't want to spin past 6500 rpm's either.

I see great results with a setup like mine both from small cams like the Crane 210-224 and big cams like the CC306 all with a decent stall converter and stock untouched heads. I would love a rough idle like the CC306 has. I definitely want the car to be noticed. I'm willing to get the torque converter restalled as high as a 3600 also.

I guess I'm looking for opinions and also want to know what you have and how it runs at the track. tia.

Alot of us have ran the GM 847 cam. Simular to the cc306 but seems to pull a little harder IMHO. That and no one has had one come apart like the other ones

Thanks! Where would be a good place to get the 847 from? Also, what stall range seems to work well with this cam?

GM847 will pull past your 6500 rpm redline and you wont be able to use all of the powerband so its a waste. Its just big for stock heads, you might would see more power over a smaller cam, especially one that was custom ground for your application. However, since you are going to be changing heads and intake in the near future, its not good to waste time and money on a cam you are gonna have to pull out later to put a bigger one in. Contact the shop where you are going to get the heads ported from and consult with them on a cam that would match the heads in the style that they port, that way when your heads arrive, your cam is already spec'd to them.

I shift my XE 227/233 at 6200 rpm. It pulls plenty hard to 6500 rpm but Im scared to rev it that high too many times with a 143k mile shortblock. Its plenty noticable since its on a 111LSA. I agree with Gangly though, dont waste the time and money on a cam now unless its going to be useable with your setup in the future.

For something 50/50 street strip a CC305 is a good mild cam. Slightly better than the LT4 Hot Cam but smaller than the CC306.

Thanks again guys. Ellis, I was really wanting an opinion from someone like yourself. I've been reading cz28.com since 98 and you're one of the 5 guys from that board that I have always respected. For every one person that has said they wish they went smaller, I have seen 10 that went with a 305 or Hotcam that wish they had gone bigger. That's why I'm leaning on the big end of the scale. I'm still in school right now, so I don't know when I'll be able to afford ported LT4's. That might still be 2 or 3 years away. I'm fairly sure I could handle a big cam until then.

I've been seeing a lot of BIG stall, stock uported head A4's running the 306 and being very happy. Ellis, you have got me interested in the 847 now too. If I see a gp on the other board, I'll probably get the 306 since that would be a cheaper route. If not, and I order parts seperate, I'll strongly consider the 847.
