Default headers or gears/stall?

I'm in the position to buy some stuff for my car and I don't know if I should get 3.73 gears and like a 3200 stall or longtube headers. I know everyone loves headers but they are illegal (california) and take a lot of work putting them in so thats why I am hesistant about it. Which choice do you think I should make..any input would be greatly appreciated because I can't decide. Thanks!

Gears and stall will make your car quicker than headers. They are also cheaper upgrades as well.

I vote gears and stall, you won't notice the headers as much until you build your motor some more and it REALLY needs the better flow from headers. Theres nothin like stalling up your trans out of the hole with a set of slicks under the car...

I vote stall.

If you have GU5, then you already have 3.23's. Plus changing gears means you need to reprogram or you have no speedo.

You won't really notice headers except for your ears and on a dyno.

Get a stall. A nice 3000-3500 stall ought to be perfect for you. Check out the sponsers, there are lots of TC suppliers.

I have headers and gears/stall and I saw more of a SOTP and track gains from gears and stall, mainly the stall. Headers will make a big difference but not as much as the stall/gears and they are going to be a headache when it comes to emissions time over there in Cali.

They do make emission legal headers but by law, moving the catalitic converter from its stock loacation is a nono. With LT's, theres no way to maintain the stock cat location. With MAC mid's, thats a different story. They maintain the stock cat placement and still have the potentail to make some awesome numbers.

Its not just there, its actually against the law everywhere. Some places just dont have the emission laws that make it where people get caught.

DONT DO HEADERS.......if your car is sitting almost stock i would highly recomend 3:73 gears and a stall "richmond gears and vig stall converter"....make sure when you do the stall you get a tranny cooler also, its a must for aftermarket stalls, i would go with a 2600-3200 stall, I have a 2800 vig and its perfect i would not want anything bigger. Once you do the gears and stall you will be very impressed trust me. Do headers when you do a bigger cam or head swap!!!!! Let us know what you think!!!!

That is def a wise choice, I did headers.... loved them.... woke up the car alot, and i did gears, i also love them.... Long tubes are worth the effort and get true duals... mean as hell!!!!!!!!

Gears and stall then headers, most gain from those two alone.

I don't believe it's illegal to move the cats but it is illegal to eliminate them or remove the guts. If moving them was illegal than how would it be possible to replace them with emissions legal high flow replacements?
I think that as long as they are there and the car passes the sniffer you'll be OK, but don't take my word for it, I don't in The People's Republic of California nor do I know all the laws. If it were me I'd talk to the DMV and get the information from the source.

Back to the topic of the thread: I'd vote stall and gears then do headers later when you do more mods to the car.
