Default optispark replacement

quick kinda noob question but my optispark is pretty much blown on my friends 94 z28. so if he got an msd ignition kit instead of a new optispark distributor would that replace it?

I think the most common problem with the optis is the cap and rotor being bad so MSD does make a cap and rotor kit but it's unclear as to whether or not he purchased that. This could be what you are talking about:

you have to keep the opti because of the optical sensor in it, you can do a coil per conversion but they are kinda pricey and dont always give the best results. if you dont have a radical motor then i say your best bet would be to just put a new opti on or if you have alot of money to spend you can get a daynatech opti. make sure you dont have any oil leaks from the timing chain cover when you replace it as well, that can ruin a opti.

Is there any possible way to check the opti without it being on the car. Wouldnt think there is but hey i figured id post it. Would suck to put the car back together then find out the opti **** on me. Between the waterpump and the timing something possibly could have gotten on it.

i dont think so....just have to put it on and hope for the best...hell if the opti is old enough you might as well go ahead and replace it while your car is tore down

Go ahead and put it together. It isn't much work to put an opti on at all. Couple hours max, unless a waterpump bolt breaks off then your just f'd in the butt
