Default Eldelbrock...AFR...or LT-4?

i know these heads make lots of power, like eldelbrock.but i also know that some people just buy them for the "name", AFR's.i just want to know what is your opinion (everyones).

i like the eldelbrocks because they make a decent amount of power for the money plus my intake is ported(even more power).

as always thanx for your knowledge!!!

SWING EM'!!!

Default heads

AFR heads are the ones you want if you plan on doing more down the road. They are the shiznit if you want the best. They are very versatile concerning porting, springs, rockers, and thickness for forced induction or nos. There really is not much comparison between these and the other heads, they are clearly in another class. There is another real superior one but you didnt mention it. Im not saying the other heads are not good heads just not in the same league as AFR

Have you read anything but their ADVERTIZMENT on their site about the Edelbrock heads. Consensus with the knowledgable forum(f-body and b-body) folks is that their LT1 heads are nowhere near worthwhile, gen1 stuff sure but not the LT1. The LT4s or AFRs are nice heads and have their uses but a hot 350 is not a particularly good one for them. For a stock shortblock ported stock castings are probably the best choice, you can get more flow than as cast aftermarket heads but with smaller ports for better velocity and at less cost. Try eportworks.com . porting the LT1 intake doesn't often gain you much unless the heads are so large as to be able to take advantage, sounds like your research has just begun and you have a lot of learning to do but you came to a good place to do so.

Just start with bare AFR or Trick Flow heads. I bought some bare AFR LT4 210s that I am going to have done probably by AI. That is the way you will get the best performance, just don't buy AFR's port job, it's just not worth the money IMO.

If a bare set of LT4 heads can be found for a decent price, pick 'em up and have a competent porter (AI) work them over for you. The LT4 head can be made to perform on par with the AFR and TFS head.

Here are some numbers that Camaro97USAF posted here on this board that were done by AI with his Trick Flows.

Lift Int Exh
.100 75.6 67.3
.200 155 118
.300 210 156
.400 255 182
.500 285 191
.550 293 196
.600 296 200
.650 296 204
.700 298 208

Here is an example of AFR 210's that were purchased bare and then ported by Lloyd Elliot:

Lloyd Elliot AFR LT4 210CC flow numbers on a 4.030 bore.

.........Intake.......Exhaust (no pipe)
.200...143............103
.300...204............141
.400...247............173
.500...281............198
.600...308............219
.700...311............227

I know that flow numbers aren't everything, and AI will tell you that when you talk to them, but Lloyd Elliot's work speaks for itself with the HP that he makes. I don't have any doubt that AFR does a decent job on their porting, I just don't think that they would spend the time, effort and detail that a reputable porting company would. Trick flows can be purchased through Summit Racing bare!

Thanks for detailed explanation.. I see there is a big difference between lloyd and AI job.. 296cfm @.600 (AI) and 308cfm @.600 (Lloyd) .. So is this healty (safe)? I mean AFR porting is 288cfm @.600 and a huge difference here..! I have no doubt that AI and Lloyd are the BEST porting companies ,but I think this is "pushing the limits".. If you want 300+cfm go with bigger heads 220,227 or 215rr ..

Those LE AFR 210 are not anything special. The CNC program that AFR uses actually has better exhaust flow. The difference in the intake flow #s are not enough to benefit especially if its a power adder car. Also flow numbers dont mean everything. Port velocity and low lift #s should be looked at to just as close. My LT-4 heads ported by GTP flow 290 on the intake and 234 on the exhaust and that is at .600 lift. If you want the strongest head that offers the thickest deck go with the AFRs. Also they will make the most power 9 times out of 10 if they are ported correctly. LT-4s would be your second choice.

You're right, there isn't that much difference between the LE and the AI heads, I wasn't trying to make a comparison between those two. There is quite a bit of difference between those heads and AFR "home ported" heads. If you do some research, people that have bought AFR heads have had them flowed and some of them aren't even flowing what they say. I know, I know, each flow bech is different, but heads from LE, AI and TEA have been tested on various flow benches and they are flow VERY close to what the porters say. I have also seen many guys that have bought AFR "home ported" heads that end up sending them to a aftermarket company later to get better performance. I am just saying, why spend all of that money (maybe a second time), when you can just buy them bare and have the best port job you can buy. Also, I don't know what you mean by "safe." That really doesn't make any sense at all and if you do some checking, AFR heads have more material and the thickest decks of any aftermarket heads that you can buy, that's why I purchased them for a FI car. Also, the reason that I did not go with AFR 215 RR is that I didn't want to have a custom intake done, I didn't need AFR 220's or 227's on a 357 ci LT1 and didn't want to mess with the offset rocker arms.

Yep, you are right, LE is not "Special", but he defintely knows what he is doing, you can tell by the HP his head and cam packages make. And, yes, if you read my previous post, you will see that I posted that "flow numbers aren't everything." But, I can tell you that if I got a set of AFR 210's back that I paid $2,000.00 to have ported and the porter claims that they flow 260cfm@.600 lift, you can guarantee that I am going to be suspicous. I have pretty much chosen to go with AI to do my heads and I can guarntee that they don't go strickly by flow numbers, do a search on www.camaroz28.com and you will see that for yourself. But, GTP's are the ones that I would be suspicous of, their heads have been know to flow WAY different than what they claim, not to mention that their customer service is HORRIBLE!

I have seen the work from both LE and AI and its very nice. Im not saying who is better or worse. Maybe you misunderstood. I know what most LT-1 or 4 heads are capable. It just seemed everyone was reverting back to flow #s. On the other hand my GTP heads flowed exactly what they said when we checked them. Customer service has been great for me and with the fact that 2 of the fastest LT-1s right now run his stuff speaks pretty strong. My new 215 RR that he did are wicked. Good luck with your build.

I have seen GTP's work firsthand also and they also do great port work. BUT, and that is a doesn't mean that their customer service is up to par. A good friend of mine has GTP ported stock cast heads on his solid roller 396 car. It is quick, it runs 10.80's on motor and that was when it was still a 6 speed car (It's since been converted to TH400). He had such a HORRIBLE experience with GTP (customer service wise), he wouldn't go back to them if they did have the fastest heads in the country. When I got my AFR heads, I was starting to look around and get a feel of what people were wanting in terms of cost for the total port work on bare heads and GTP was one that I wanted an estimate from because I knew that they were good. He warned me not to even contact them but I did anyway. Funny thing, I never even got a response from them. Not a, "Hey, we're too busy to take on any work." Not a, "Don't want your business" or anything. So, needless to say, GTP (along with TEA because they didn't contact me back either) will not get my business because I guess that my $2,500-$3,000 isn't good enough for them. That's ok, there are companies like Advanced Induction, Elliott Port Works, Port Pros and Meaux Racing Heads that I am sure are more than willing to take my money.
