Sell It Or Mod It?
I'm debating with myself wheather or not to sell my car, it has 90,xxx on it, no problems, runs very strong. But I'm running into about 10 grand from back child support from my Dad and with that I plan on paying off my car, about 4k left, and modding it. But I can also get a newer 98+ Z, and have some cash left over after a trade in hopefully. I would have a newer car with less miles, and I wouldn't have too worry about breaking down or anything fun like that. The car runs strong but with my luck I don't know how long that will last. I decided to post because I figured someone could give some advice, and make me think of something I haven't though of, and maybe someone else has done this with good or not so good results. Also what does everyone think I will get on a trade in, 93 Z28 will probably have 92-93k on it, excellent shape on the exterior, everything works well, rip on drivers seat and cig burn. Red, A4, mods don't really effect trade in but they are in my sig.
Looking for advice guys, I love my LT1, but I want something with lower miles, a bit better gas mileage, and something I don't have to dump money into in College. With gas prices latley I'm considering getting a damn moped to drive to and from work and school, so the new Camaro if I get one won't be driven quite as much as this one. It would also be nice to have a newer Z to trade in on a new Camaro when they come out... and they will.
EDIT: With the other 6 grand after paying off the LT1 I plan on doing Heads/Cam, gears, suspension etc. It would be very fast but it wouldn't exactly be great for College.

well, first off... you arent going to get **** in trade in for a 93 Z with that many miles. If you do decide to sell it, do so privately and get more $$$.
Also, although a heads/cam LT1 isnt going to be a gas saver, or practical...neither is a newer LS1 car. Before you know you will be modding that too, and basically be in the same boat. I personally like the look of LT1 maros better than LS1s.
However, there is something to be said for a lower mileage, newer car of the same type. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

hard decision if you ask me but you will loose out if u trade in your Z-28. I as well like the LT1 Z's better then the LS1 Z's. Maybe you should keep ur Z the way it is and just invest that 10 G's and watch it grow so you can get a nicer car when you graduate ro whatever. They say if you invest into the stock market when your around 18 or so, you will make more money between the years you are 18-30 than if you start investing when you are 30 years old until you die.

If you have the money to blow, get an LS1 car and don't waste your time modding the LT1. Not that it can't be worthwhile, but I think I speak for many LT1 owners when I say I wish I would have held out a little longer for an LS1 car.
The 2000 Police Camaros had LT1s in them beause of the better gas mileage/reliability of the engines if I recall correctly.
I would not spend all of the 4k on the car, maybe if theres something you been wanting bad do it and keep the rest of the money for "just incase".

Not a chance. I got a 44,000 mile fully loaded Black Trans Am for $5,000 even. I have put *maybe* $1,000 worth of mods into it at most, and considering its basically the same cheapo body as an LS1 car and the same fkn interior more or less, Im actually glad I didn't spend 10K plus on an LS1 trans am with what, 20-30 more HP and a metallicy tin can sounding exhaust note....

I don't think that's true at all. If I had wanted an LS1 I would still be saving, instead I'm driving and modding. LT1s aren't all that much slower than LS1s in stock form anyway.
Yeah it's a tuff decision, and I know I probably won't get much on a trade in but I probably won't get more then 5k if I sell it myself either. I'm just afraid of running into problems while I'm in college and have no money. I might just do headers/exhaust, springs/shocks/ SFC's, and Maybe gears. And save the rest of the money. My uncle paints cars for a living so I can have him spot paint the parts that are chipping and maybe throw some stripes on it or something. He said he could paint it for $700 bucks and he does good work.
If I had te money to I would have an ls1 ss or ws6. As much as I would want to mod the lt1 if I did h/c on an ls1 and h/c on an lt1 both of the same caliber well the ls1 will come out on top, point being for the bolt ons you end u with more power in an ls1.
But with the extra cash you could build a beast of an lt1
decsions decisions
go with your gut instinct.

I'm also considering buying 6k worth of powerball tickets. By the way Flexnutz, your Acclaim is badass. We should race it against my Ford Tempo with Ferrari Emblems lol.

Keep your Lt1 man, i went thro a phase just like ur doing now. I wanted less miles and bla bla i have 133k on my 93 z but i took it into a dealership for vettes and maros and they would have given me like 2gs for it. Save ur money or mod ur car you have low miles man 90k ainth that bad

And nothing is wrong with my LT1 either! From my own personal experiences, your average bone stock LT1 runs low 14's @ 97-99 (some a little better; some a little worse). Whereas your average bone stock LS1 runs mid 13's @ 103-105 (some a little better; some a little worse). Everything just depends upon vehicle condition, transmission, gearing, driver error, track prep, and weather...
Best I've ever seen an LT1 go completely stock was a 13.5ish...And it wasn't too long ago that someone local here ran his factory stock '01 WS6 to a 12.8ish @ 109 at Union Grove (Great Lakes Dragway).

Anyway, to the thread starter...A newer car would no doubt be nice, but you won't have much money leftover after you purchase a lower-mileaged LS1. Since you won't get $hit for your '93, I say just keep it, do ONLY bolt-ons while your in college (to maintain your drivability & gas mileage). You'll also have plenty of money in the bank in case you need it. And then finally build up the motor once you can purchase a new DD car after you graduate and start up in the real world...

Just my .02...
