LT1 exhaust is too loud, suggestions?
My bro has a '94 LT1 with longtube headers, offroad y pipe and loudmouth. The car is ridiculously loud and imo sounds like ****, its way to raspy. Whats an inexpensive way he could quiet it down and make it sound better? Would replacing the resonator with a 3" dynomax bullet make any difference?

I know the loudmouth is the problem. A catback is out of the question because hes a broke college student and couldnt afford to buy anything more than $100. Thats why I was wondering if a 3" dynomax bullet muffler would make a difference since theyre around $45.

Actually I thinka cutout would sound very similar to a loudmouth... though I think since it dumps under the car it may change the sound because of bouncing off the ground(not straight out the back). If he could get a cheap $30 cutout now... just save up and once he gets $150, he could get the electric valve to open/close it at his leisure. I have that and love it Not to mention it would really be sweet as a sleeper
edit: I will eventually have the same setup as your friend(pacesetter LTs, some kinda y pipe) except I'll toss a cat onto it to pass visual inspection. I've been told cats can really clean up the sound and make it better. Maybe give that a try? I believe a catco converter is like $50? So he could easily try that, and if still not happy, get the cutout. Then save for the e-valve.

used hooker catback, or stock with a cutout. the dynomouth (bullet muffler in place of the loudmouth resonator) is still going to be quite loud, but will have a better tone than the loudmouth.
if you can fit a bullet into the catback, and still leave the resonator, that may quiet it a bit also.
but i would really recommend a used hooker....wish i still worked for advance auto parts, i coulda hooked ya with one brand new for $215.

Vik your brother's exhaust is loud, but it is IMO way too raspy. My cutouts don't sound raspy at all if you've ever heard them open. Maybe have him try a cutout and use a different muffler. He could try a spintech, then again he'd need an xpipe to make that sound not soo raspy (My spintechs aren't raspy either )

I think Ill tell him to try and sell the damn thing and see what he can get. If that doesnt pan out, I guess he could try a cutout or bullet replacement for the time being. Im sure any of those options would be better than keeping the current setup. Thanks for everyones input.

There is someone posting on fbody.com and lt1tech.com today looking to trade a newer MagnaFlow LT1 catback for a Loudmouth. I have the MagnaFlow with LTs and off-road y-pipe, and I like the sound alot.
