Well, now let me ask though. I am getting my parents 1996 Impala SS from them in a few months and the modding will start beginning soon. A few of the first things to go will be the intake and exhaust. My ultimate plans are to put a rather large cam in and matching heads. Headers, exhaust will most likely be the first thing I tackle. What I am wanting to do is a set of Long Tubes, a set of dual electric cutouts, all leading back to dynomax bullet mufflers most likley dumped. I know that stock the Impy has duals but what size is the stock tubing? Isn't it setup like an H-pipe design. I haven't decided whether or not I want to run catless or with cats, but would like a good boltup cat back setup with an X-pipe. I have seen a set of electric cutouts that I could buy pretty cheap, but they are 3", will that work on the Impy, or does it need to be a smaller diameter? Also, what is the best intake setup. I really like the looks of the RAISS

stock exhaust is like 2- 2 1/4" depending on where it is. It has no H pipe. As for long tubes there's only three places to get those from. One is a set of afterburners that originally are not meant to fit the car and will require mods, the next is a set of Quad 1s from Dan at Clear Image Automotive, or there's a nother set of long tubes tht I don't think are made anymore.
Otherwise besides having a set custom made, the only mass produced headers for these cars are shorties..

So is everyone running shorties or is it worth it to get the long tubes. I had actually thought that there was another manufacturer producing the long tubes, but I must have been mistaken. And the stock exhaust is just straight back, no h-pipe huh? Well, I'll be honest, that I am still very green to these cars. I haven't looked much at my folks Impy that I am buying but I do know it is bone stock.

Well as far as longtubes there are a lot of "midlength" with boltin hookup pipes which effectively extend the collector, if you coult these the Clear Image Automotive mentioned above has an impressive assortment of options. There used to be Grothann's and I believe FLP makes some as well but options are drying up and Clear Image is the only one I know of currently actively supporting the b-body header market.
He would build you hookup pipes(to stock style catback) to go with any of his headers with cutouts if you like.
The stock exhaust system on these things is bad once you get past the cats, major crushing under the tranny crossmember, mufflers are 1.75" inside, over the axles are small, resonators are not bad but everyone wants to believe they are and rips them out creating drone. These things have such large areas of fairly flat sheetmetal it can act like a big drum and just resonate so I strongly suggest you keep it plumbed all the way out the back possibly with resonators or straight tips exiting under the bumper facing back.

After waiting for my friend for 6 months, I got my tape back, and borrowed my other friends Camcorder. After finding the right USB driver (damn computer of mine has No firewire) I got the video uploaded.

This was taken back in June a couple days after I got back from Muncie IN. Setup as described earlier. If you're wondering why there is a ring to my exhaust, the tips (as mentioned in the title) are causing that. They are being removed this spring. note; Don't buy cheap stainless.

I will try to get a clip of my cutouts this week.

The two ton cars are fun. Check out this burnout pic with me (220#) + three teenagers, a 70# dog, and about 100# of sub, amp, etc.

Clear Image makes budget full length headers along with the shorties, the quad-1, and the tri-y headers.

I have the budgets, very well built with very minimal fitment issues that could be related to the 160K on the car. The realeauty of the CIA stuff is the boltin cats or hookup pipes with cutouts too if you want. This means no trying to find an exhaust shop to hookup headers to the catback.
