Cold Air Intake vs. Ram Air Kit
just curious if anyone knows some #'s on the advantages of ram air vs CAI. I have an SLP CAI that came on the car when i bought it (so i didnt pay for it) and if there is enough of an advantage of HP to $ to taking the CAI off and putting a ram air kit/hood on, i'd like to, but i'm not sure its really worth it??

Not worth it
They both have the same purpose, and i dont believe you are going to see a significant gain by switching, if you even see a gain. Where the intake is located doesnt really matter, the real purpose is to get rid of the restrictive stock setup. The engine is going to only take as much air as it needs, its not like you have to force air down it.

Forced air is always good, but most people don't realize that even at 100MPH, the max "ram air" effect you can get is....
.18PSI!!!
It's not until you start getting near 200mph that there's a real payoff.
Cold air intake pays off right away - about 1% power increase for every 10degrees cooler air.

I read somewhere that you get like 1% increase in power at 100 mph, like 2% by 150. Definately not worth the money unless looks are a big factor, cause you have to admit ram airs just look really cool.

This has been debated for years. One is not much better then the other. Also the stock SS hoods aren't that great because of the winding intake tubing and heat soak from sitting on top of the motor. The best hoods for air intake are the WS6 hoods or the Ultra-Z. I have the Ultra-Z which basically is close to an LS1 style of intake. The only reason I got my hood was because some tard backed up on top of my stock one. Whatever you have I would just stick with it, and spend your money elsewhere like exhaust etc.

thanks a lot everyone. looks like its not worth it, and i am going for the sleeper look, although my exhaust and tips kinda kill some of that......(i wonder if they make plugs for my pipes).....I dont have any markings on the vehicle or anything, its very plain looking even down to the rims.

id go ram air, only reasons are
a. cool factor in saying i have ram air
b. cleans up the engine bay imo
other than those benefits, both are pretty even in each other, no real performance difference over the other, but there is a difference between them and the stock airbox
