93 Octane???
93 Octane??? Ok, right now, with the mods in my sig, i'm running regular gas, 87 octane. Is it save with the added compression from the LT4 heads to run 93 or a higher octane than what i'm running now? Also, will I get more power from it? thanks

Mine ran like crap on 87 octane. I accidentally put that in it the first day I got it. I was so used to putting 87 in all my other vehicles. I would not recomment running anything other than at least a 91.
Octane does not make power, octane resists detonation and 93 may be what most of you run but that is also probably the breaking point for octane on a stockish motor, more octane beyond that even with tuning and you could LOSE power.
Red97Z, I don't see tuning in your sig, if you haven't gotten at least a mailoder tune that has to be a priority. If you do have tuning what did the tuner tune it for?
Everyone likes to talk about how aluminum "allows"(more like requires) more compression than iron and often say one full point, the iron head LT1s are 10:1 bone stock and tuned to run 87 octane, I fully believe an aluminum head motor could easily run well up to 11:1 depending on cam and tune on 87 octane. Now before you say something stupid like the octane is the reason for the high HP rating on the aluminum head motors it may be a part of it BUT the big thing was that motor was put in a heavier car and was much better matched to that car than an f-body motor is, it is also rated at a higher peak torque at a lower rpm even though it has less compression and 87 octane tuning. The guys that have pushed the bolton b-bodies have topped the 300rwhp mark so don't mistake it for detuned.

wow thanks for all the replies, it was weird that my car was running fine on 87 and saving me a little money, but with all your replies, i'm excited to feel the power at my next pump stop!
Octane is the least of your problems then, bet a tune at this point gains you more than the heads/cam did. The money you spent on the TB or MSD would have gone MUCH MUCH further tuning it right. Reprogramming is a HUGE part of modifying a computer controlled car.
You should have been running super from day one. Note that detonation is not always audible. When you do any kind of modifications a correct tune is a must. Detuning to run 87 octane is the wrong answer. Caprices got a tune for 87 octane for non-performance reasons.

IMO, I consider 87 crap gas for an every day beater or somethin small. Who would want to run it in a Perfromance Engine, with alot of expensive parts... I ran 105 one time at the track, it was a little more peppy than usuaul.
