Default Which is the easiest way to remove the LT1, Top or bottom?

I thought I'd finally make this subject a poll. There is so much argument that it had to be done.I personally think the bottom, but I have yet to Yank Mine. So I dont really know. So which way really is the fastest and easiest.

I would be more interested in if it was easier to put it back in from the top or bottom. I think I read somewhere that someone completely reassembled the long block and bolted up the trans before he put it back in the car.

By the way, I took mine out through the top with trans attached and intake manifold off. Not saying that is the easiest though.

I would like to know also. I have the top end off mine right now. So I am wondering if I should just pull it from the top or go from the bottom. Although the stage I am at I am sure the top or bottom would be easy.

Out the top is just as easy as the bottom.

Top reasons to pull it out the top.
1. You do not have a lift.
2. You do need to move the car until project is finished.
3. Easy to do at home for most.
4. No need to drain a/c, brakes, or power steering

Top Reasons to drop it out the bottom
1. You have a two post lift and the car stay on it till done.
2. Easier to strip engine down while sitting on K-member
3. Easier to put stuff back on Engine when going back in with engine.
4. Easier to take pictures of while stuffing it in

Those are just a few. I have done it both ways several times and just prefer doing them out the top. LSx are even easier out the top because they are smaller

One is not better then the other it is more of a Preference thing I am sure there are many more merits’ to each side but those are just a few that came to mind

I have seen 2 write ups that have done out the bottom with no lift and have heard of a few others that have done it in their garage with no lift. I'm sure it would make it easier but it is not needed from what I'm told. Just some FYI.

From the bottom is easyer and safer to braking things, easy as pie to line up the motor with the tranny on under the car

Like I said I have done it both ways.

IMHO taking it out of the bottom with out a lift is not the safest way to do things BUT the is just how I feel about it.

Still trying to figure out how you break more things doing it one way or the other? Stupidity?

I prefer coming out of the top. A lot safer for the home mechanic. It does not take too long to do so.

I voted bottom. Ive taken em out both ways and the top took longer for sure. You have to remove so much crap from the motor to get it to clear that it takes roughly twice the time.
Top took me and a mechanically inclined (no babysitting) budy about a full day = 6 1/2-7 hours.
Bottom took me and myself only 3 hours!
It helps that I have access to a lift, and can leave the bird on the lift as long as needed.

Almost anyone that has ever told me it was easier through the top hadn't done it from the bottom. There's a reason dealers drop it out the bottom, and they are the masters of shortcutting things. . .

Did both of mine out the bottom, first took about a day, then realized I could remeber everything so the next took about 2.5-3 hours. Put the rear wheels on old rims and used a chain fall, no lift needed. Never tried out the top, read some reviews and got scared out of trying it.

I've done it both ways. To me, top is easier. Don't have to open the brake or power steering lines, and with a Happy Hooker, the motor practically jumps out of the car, with the hood still intact.

If I'm just going to pull the motor, I'd do it out the top. This last time I also added Eibachs/Bilsteins & LS1 front spindles... so it made sense to drop it out the bottom.

To move around the whole assembly (motor/trans/subframe/struts/wheels), I installed my strut tower brace and used the engine hoist. Made moving it around very easy. All using the Happy Hooker (and those 4 itty bitty bolts ).

I pulled mine out using a cherry picker to lift the front of the car.

Reinstalled it the same way too.
