What are the symptoms of the opti going to crap?

Usually the car misfires, doesn't start, or just dies all together.

My car wont start (just rotates, never fully turns over) and I dont think it is getting any spark. Sound like the opti?


The thing is, it drove fine all day then I parked it for maybe 3 hours. Then it wouldnt start.

If it's the stock opti, most likely it took a crap on you, it's not all that uncommon, try to see if any of your cylinders are getting spark, if they aren't, then it's narrowed down to the opti, in which case you can replace it with an OEM or MSD unit.

Yep, stock opti. But dont they usually go out over a certain time period where the car misfires real bad ad you can tell something is wrong instead of going out just like "that"?

edit: The engine also tries to turn over when you turn the key. I thought if the opti went out, when you turned the key the engine just sat and didnt do anything?

well the opti controls and distributes spark to each cylinder, I don't see why the starter would stop working if the opti went out..

Luke: You need to make sure to differentiate between cranking and not starting, and not cranking. It will confuse people if your not clear. if indeed the car is cranking, but not starting, run the tests from my article. http://www.mainstreamtopics.com/foru...p?showtopic=78


To answer the original question.
running issues with a bad opti are a misfire. you can also have a heat soaked stall, meaning that teh car will run untill it's hot and then die. Of course another is a no start altogether

the first sign I have seen on three different occasions has been the car is hard to start. Having soaked mine in coolant all weekend, my 4th one is now hard to start. sounds familiar

Thanks, car cranks but will not start. It just sits there and cranks. Thanks for the link too.

Since Im not getting any spark, does that rule out the starter going bad and causing the car not to start?

if the car is cranking, the starter is doing the only thing that the starter is there to do.

I would have to say that the opti might be a strong possibility. See if you are getting strong spark at all cylenders and go from there. The opti doesnt always give warning signs either. I was racing someone when mine went out, all I heard was a loud pop and the car quit. I thought I f'd the motor, but it turns out the rotor inside the opti exploded into like 3 or 4 pieces.

when you say the car quit...it just shut off..?? or did it run like ****? Because mine was running fine, and than a loud pop (im guessing it was a back fire??)...after that...it ran horribly!! hesitation and all..

No i heard a loud pop and the car just died, it sounded like i blew a rod or something. It was even worse for me cuz i was WOT, so i thought i really f'd something up.

Pop can be backfiring from gas not being burnt properly after the opti crapped!

yea thats what it is, but it just scared the crap out of me. But it turns out the rotor inside my opti was in 3-4 pieces.

i put in heads cam headers and everything eles then put in a new cap and rotor and its not getting any spark, the only main wires that arnt hooked up are the o2s could i have put the cap and rotor in wrong the two very thin metal disk fell out and i had to put them back in i think it was the right way. could this be the promblem and if it is how do they go on. pic if possible thanks

the metal disk is right everything is togather right but no spark im thinking new opti
