Default no oil pressure reading

I just started up the car today and the oil pressure guage is reading 0 but the car still runs. I drove it 1 block and then parked it. I'm not taking any chances. Checked the dipstick and oil level is fine. I just changed the oil and filter about 600 miles ago and used 5w30.

Would the car still run if there was no oil pressure?

If you had absolutly no oil pressure, I don't think it would make it down the block. Check the sensor on the back of the engine

Check the gauge and sensor first, but don't rule out the oil pump driveshaft or the oil pump driveshaft gear. The gear is what got chewed up on mine for no apparent reason. You could take off the intake and check the gear (safe way) or you could fire it up and see if you hear lifters ticking (not so safe way!)

Is this a freshly installed engine, or did it just happen today?

If it just happened today, have you recently raced it? (pickup tube?)

If it's freshly installed, could be a missing part or incorrectly installed part. If it just started, could be the sending unit or the pickup tube.

I ran my new motor without an oil pump driveshaft. Oops. I didn't drive it, but it ran fine. (and yes, it recovered nicely too, thank God for lots of assembly lube ).

Its very easy to bust the sender when installing the motor...Been there, done that...

Does that mean it was just reading wrong or it was causing to be too low? Is there any way to check if it's the pickup tube? I'm having the same problem after a cam install.

My engine shop tested the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge and it read fine. The sensor was just making the dash gauge read 0. There was nothing ever wrong with the oil pressure.

You must have had the sender above the oil filter then.
