Unfortunatly, 8 out of 10 times you have to put the dipstick in before the Canton pan goes on. Either that or modify the pan a little in that area. Not the best fit.

You may also try just loosening the pan in/around that area too, although you may have to loosen almost the entire pan.

that sucks hard core. I got the motor all back together. It is almost ready to go in. all i have to do is put the headers and tranny on. DO you think it would be all right to cut the dipstick down so it fights in and let the actual dip stick part just sit in the motor.

I wouldnt cut it. What size motor? If you are using 4 bolt splayed caps, you *may* have to clearance the dipstick some to clear the caps. If not, just loosen the pan some and it will eventually go in.

I couldn't get mine to go in after I had the motor together and in the car either (using a Canton RR pan) I cut the tube and got it to go in. ONE BIT OF ADVICE......if you do this....don't put the dipstick in, use a dummy plug and just use the dipstick when you want to check it....the crankshaft got the end of mine and tore it off (using a Callies 383 crank) I got it out of the pan before anything major happened but it still wasn't fun. So either make sure its on right to begin with before you put the motor in the car or cut it off and keep a second stick in the back.

If you do cut it off, no it will not read right...or at least mine didn't.

Here is the other deal that most people dont know about when using a Canton pan....this info came directly from Canton. Make sure that when you are using the canton pan that when filling your oil put EXACTLY 6qts in. After that, check the dipstick and mark it. even though it may read differently than what the "stock markings" would indicate, it is actually full. That is the purpose for marking it....Canton says that whatever the dipstick reads with exactly 6qts of oil in the motor that THAT is the full mark.

96....wow, I just figured you were from NYC since you only have "NY" in your profile I live in western NY and race almost every week at NYI (Leichester)....I am sure I have probably seen you there before.

I have a black "stock looking" 93 Formula M6, 396ci solid roller, etc...

We actually have a local "western NY based" LT1/LS1 club if you are interested too....lots of fast cars.

Definatly would have know that car if I had seen it What all do you have done to it?

I live in Bath, and go to school in Rochester.

Also, our club is having an event in Buffalo this saturday if you are interested in coming....just having fun racing some go-carts, then going out to eat. I doubt anyone will have their cars there, but we have an event every month in the winter, and usually multiple events each month in the spring/summer/fall. Pretty relaxed club that just focuses on modding/racing LT1/LS1 cars and having good fun with friends.

Regarding the fit of the pan around the dip stick tube, I consider it poor engineering. Was sent 2 different pans. Was gonna try a third till I realized (after verbal communication with Canton)it was not gonna be different. The pan covers 1/3 of the tube hole in the block. There is/was no way the pan could be shifted (within the attachment bolt hole clearance) to clear the tube.

In my case, the fix is to cut out that area of the Canton pan, and graft a similar area from an oem pan. When a person compares this area of the Canton pan with an oem pan, the problem becomes apparent. Not even close!

Canton told me their engineering altered the tube clearance location to rectify the problem. Well, what I was told, was that the location of the 'V' was moved parallel with the crank. Don't recall if it was moved fore or aft, cuz it is mute. That is not where the problem lies.

In the end, after keeping the pan, I wrote a polite but very frank letter to Canton. I wrote that I, in good conscience, could not recommend that pan to anyone. I alsotold them that some of their customers are cutting the tube tomake it fit. Well, this is NOT the answer. To their credit, they did appear to be sincere in their attempt to accommodate me, and supply me with a pan that fit. However, their attempt fell miserably short. Maybe if their engineering would just look at an oem pan, maybe the lite would go on. The time and expense necessary to correct their screwup is uncalled for. I've worked with tool design personal for over 30 years. Some are a credit to their profession. Some I wonder how they find their way home at nite, without asking for directions.

All of the previous issues with the Canton pan have been resolved with the new design. It has a new part number 15-242T. It uses a different core, which solves the steering rack clearance problem, as well as a flush oil level sender mount to allow use of Hooker long tubes. The dipstick tube problem was solved through a change in the core stamping a few months ago, before this new pan became available. There are a couple pics of the new pan on my website.
