I would recommend a higher stalled torque converter. You'll get a bigger SOTP feeling as well as a larger reduction to your et with a new verter over the gears. Plus, you'll retain the same highway mpg as before. This is coming from a former stalled a4 owner.

I gained a solid 1/10 when I switched to 3.73 from 3.23. Lowered the car also that year though, so that hurt the gain a little bit.

3.73's hasn't effected my gas mileage at all.

No power is gained from switching gears.

Gears dont give you more horsepower or torque. They basically convert rotation into motion. The car runs at a higher rpm level with the shorter gears so its more in its powerband so to speak and accelerates at a faster rate with a reduced top speed.

A stall is going to be a more noticeable SOTP feel, no matter what the gears are there is still some gaps between the gears in A4 cars unless your running something real agressive in the rear end. The stall will give you the shift extension to get rid of those gaps plus launch harder.
