Default can the oil pan be removed without pulling engine

I have an LT1 in my thirdgen. During shipping of the engine, the oil pan got a little dinged and I'm thinking of replacing it. Can the pan be changed out without having to pull the engine?

Thanks

Yes, take the motor mounts loose pull the oil level sensor and the crank has to be in the right position.

Lowering the K-member an inch or so will buy you some more room.
The entire process in general is a major PITA.

We did it on my 97, lifted the motor, dropped the kmember a little, dropped the pan and replaced the oil pump pickup tube, put it all back together. Took about 5hrs total with a long lunch break.

Would the gasket get wrecked if I use a floor jack with a block and jacked from the oil pan and stuck some blocks between the block and motor mounts? That's what my Haynes book recommends.

If the pan isn't messed up really bad, I would not fool with it.

I'll first try and tighten the oil pan bolts, maybe they're loose. If that doesn't work, i'll try removing the bolts, the oil level sensor, and see if I can position the crank so that I can change the gasket.

You don't need to pull off the pan to change the gasket. Just take out all the bolts and let it rest on the k-member, and take out the oil level sensor took. Take out the old gasket, clean the block and pan real good, slide the new gaset around the outside of the pan, then put blotches of rtv in the 4 corners and bolt it back up. Shouldn't take more than an hour or 2 taking your time.

I always kinda wondered about getting the gasket around the pickup. We removed the pan on a buddy's car by hooking the motor to a lift and getting it as high as we could and got it out. Not fun. Did not want to unbutton the K member.

You don't have to worry about the pickup, the gasket slides around the outside of the pan with ease.

So you're saying the pan sits low enough to get the gasket under the pickup? We didn't look when we did cuz the pan had to come off anyway.

You aren't listening to me. The gasket slides around the outside of the pan.

If the gasket is continuous all the way around does it not have to go under the pickup???

I'm not real sure what kinda gasket you are talking about but the only way I see to "slide it around the outside of the pan" would be to cut the gasket. Personally I wouldn't want to do that.

I'm talking about the stock 1 piece gasket. It just slides around the outside of the pan, there isn't anything else to it. You don't have to cut it or anything like that. I don't know how I can explain this any better.

You mean you stretch it out and put it around the pan from its bottom up? You were saying the outside of the pan and I kept envisioning the pan rail. I used a GM gasket on mine and I don't see that much stretch in the neoprene without ruining it.
