Default Newb Questions

My knowledge of cars is quite limited compared to most of you. I know alot about some things and nothing about others. Needless to say this site has been wonderful throughout the time I have owned my two LT1's.
But I do have a couple of questions if you wonderful people would not mind taking a minute to fill me in.

Im thinking about making the 'hawk a 383, so i was searching around, and I came across some HP/TQ numbers, but on a mustang dyno. WTH is a mustang dyno? I thought a dyno was a dyno?

And also everyone always talks about how tuning is so important with heads/cam/stroke ect. This is the route I am planning on going at the end of the summer. What exactly is meant by the term "tuning"? Is it like a programmer that plugs in, or do you take it to someone to have it tuned? And is it possible to tune a 93 model with an OBD1? Thats what I am lookin at with the hawk.

Mustang is just a type of dyno manufacturer they usually read a little lower then a dynojet. Tunning is computer tuning done by a knowledgeable tuner not just some plug in thing. The tunning is needed for the new cam, extra airflow, fuel and whatnot.

How much does tuning cost? And can my firehawk be tuned if it is an OBD1 car?

a full dyno tune (the kind you will definitely want with stroker/heads/cam) is typically $300-$500.

Do dyno tunes still do burned chips?

And you drop a new chip in, not a typical tune like the 94+ people get to do.

Yeah the 93 is a little different. Maybe not as easy as 94+. Your location may have a lot to do with it.

Well yeah, you obviously need to find someone that supports that or buy the hardware yourself before going to a tuner.

well see the thing is the car i bought had all types of money in it, but the lady got it out of divorce, and hence knew nothing about it. The computer has a fastchips logo on it. Does that mean it is tuned? And if so should i get it re-tuned?

naa fastchips is just a generic tune. Your going to be seeking a tune that is specific to your combo your going to bolt on. What makes it difficult with a 93 is that your chip will be a physical chip swap. Being that was the only year for that, tuning will be limited to only the handfull that do that tuning.

I believe there is a site specifically for 93's that your going to find much more info about it. Can somebody chime in here?

Why would you want to do that?

Isn't "Fastchip" Ed Wright's company? Maybe he just typed it wrong?

Even if you were trying to reap the benefits of having to only plug in to pass with OBD2 conversion, they will still stop you because of the year model of your car.

That being said, OBD1 has cheaper diagnostic and tuning options for less $, but does however get the dreaded sniffer.

OBTW being your a 1997 you should have OBD2 already.

92 Y-Body used chips as well, not to mention all the TPI cars. This is my second EPROM car, and the second one I've made my own chip for. However, as much as I'd love to tune a file for someone, I have NO idea what to do after you add mods. Mine is only good for a stock motor with the free mods and a non-stock muffler + CAI.
