The 160 degree t-stat will make your hot air during the winter a bit cooler.

When was the last time you flushed the coolant?

What is the coolant level at?

How long have your fans not been working?

These are all extremely important things, especially now that we're getting into the heat of the summer.

my car gets hot too.. i see's 235 or so before the fans come on. i have the stock thermy. i hear itl mess **** up if you replace it with anything different then what it came with? any truth to that? if not what thermy should i get to keep it cool? it was sitting for 2 years also

It takes less than 5 minutes to swap to a 160 Thermostat. It won't affect anything, it simply opens up sooner so it lets coolant in more quickly. I'm in Florida so I'm not as concerned with cold starts and warming up in the morning, but I'm yet to hear any horror stories of using a 160 Thermostat.

If the car was sitting for two years, I'd suggest getting it flushed with fresh GM Dex-Cool and ensuring that there aren't any air bubbles in the system.

Some of the biggest cooling system issues with the LT1 cars now that they're getting older is that people who owned them previously would top the cars off with normal green coolant. When you mix green coolant with dex-cool it makes a nice mud. Which if it isn't flushed out, it can rust the radiator and ruin the rest of the cooling system.

Also the LT1 was made to run hot from the factory anyways, to help decrease emissions. The fans aren't set to turn on until 210* (if I remember correctly). A basic tune can fix this as well.

Close,i think its like 225,but either way. Like officer says,get it tuned or a fan switch.

Just a heads up, my radiator was full of calcium deposits and prevented cooling. I had another laying around. However I am fairly certain I can clean it up for future use. If you are stumped with the cooling, make sure your radiator is clear and clean!

If I'm not mistaken..the Fans aren't programmed to come on until about 210..and both automatically come on when you turn the AC on.

I'd say the waterpump is bad. Replace it along with a 160* thermostat. Might need to add an opti to that list too.

Default Using 160 thermostat as band aid...

I read a bunch of threads on a bunch of forums regarding overheating problems with LT1's. IMO too many saw the 160 therm as a band aid. It will help a NON-overheating LT run a little cooler, but it WON'T solve a true overheating problem.

My suggestion is to test the fan, get a pressure check and get a coolant check. None of these are expensive and may actually save you money in the long run.

lol the fans do work actually. i dont kno why they wasnt coming on when it was overheating. we checked everything and he says the waterpump is fine. im bout to drive this **** to see if something happens. wish me luck

ok well the car is a lil better i noticed it doest go to 210 fast. But stays in the 180-190ish while cruising. my airconditioner has gotten colder too.

Update tested the beast out this morning hehehe on the highway not the street like lastnight. Well temps have gotten a lil higher when im at a stop and it just goes over 220 easily. so its gotten worse a bit. Not to mention there is this lil ticking sound im now hearing.

Give yall opinions on what i should do to get the car cooler. Besides the 160 tstat. trying to make it last a lil longer.

4 The thing that covers the thermostat wont close all the way due to a screw not going in he twisted it and it wont get tighter at all there was some otherstuff he said. But i forgot. But imma try to get more info soon but what do yall think is wrong with it.
Hi Folks
For the past 3 summers the car would over heat big time when in traffic - it would not take long to get hot, almost into the red. Had to shut the AC and turn on the heat to cool the car down while driving - not fun. Anyway to make a long story short, had a water pump leak - small but enough to hose my Optispark unit. So replace the water pump and the unit, to my surprise the car ran cool - never go hot again, does not go pass the center on the gauage in heavy traffic and on hot days 90+. I was shocked on how cool it runs now - never thought it was the water pump - tried everything else until this happened. Depending on the mileage - I would change the water pump if you tried everything else. By the way I am running a 160 thermostat.

That_guy, I think you need a new waterpump. I've gone through the cooling nightmare with my uncle's LT1. I replaced all of the fan relays first, that did nothing. I thought the car may have been leaking coolant, so I checked all the hoses, and one of them had a crack in it. A few minutes later, it toasted the opti. Since I haven't had much experience with LT1s, I let my mechanic put a new opti on and told him about the issue with it running hot. He checked the waterpump out and it had took a complete dump. After putting that on, the car runs around 180-185* all day long. How many miles are on your car? My uncle's had around 111,000 on it the waterpump was replaced.

Might want to flush the system then make sure you bleed it, you can get hot pockets of air that cause the engine to run hot, there are 2 screw valves that open up and release the air in it.
