finally took her to the track
ok guys i finally got my car to a 1/4 mile track last night. things went very good, didnt break anything and had a great time. i was shooting for a 13.6 based on my 1/8 mile times and ended up running a little better. my best pass of the night was a 13.48 @ 100.37 mph. i was very pleased with it. my 60 was a 2.08
now i did have a few minor problems that im hoping some of you can address
1) on about 4 of my earlier runs, including my best run, she started hitting the rev limiter before going into 3rd gear. ide say she bounced about 3 times then went to the next gear. any reason why this would be doing this now even tho it hasnt done it before and didnt do it the rest of the night?
2) ive always manual shifted with my megashifter, however it is always just for fun because i always shift long before i need to (probably 4000 rpm) because the tranny usually shifts right where she is suppost to and if i really tried to shift at the right time it would probably hit the rev limiter due to the delay in the tranny. well anyway, for the first time i just left it in overdrive and just sat back. well that time it shifted into overdrive at about 4500 rpms with lots of track left. of course the motor practically laid over at 3 k rpms in OD. well its no big deal because i usually just leave it in 3rd after shifting from 1 and 2, but i was just wondering if that is normal for it to go into OD at WOT at 4500 rpms
3)one more thing. my runs kept getting considerably slower as the night went on. i made 9 passes but only 5 are comparable because i took some people down the track on the other ones. the e.t.'s went like this in order: 13.69, 13.48, 13.65, 13.63, 13.99. even the runs that i had a passenger were getting slower. the last passenger ride was a 14.29 with only 150 pounds extra. i know this is not a lot of runs to go by, but i can tell it was getting consistently slower. i beleive it was in my 60 ft because they were up by 2 tenths when compared to my first 2 runs (2.08 to 2.26 by the end). however, traction was not a big or increasing problem. hooked for the most part. one guy said something about my conveter getting hot and not stalling as high because he said it was bogging a little at the line. i dont know, any ideas? air temp was getting a little cooler if that means anything. tranny was not slipping
i know this seams like a lot of information but it will be hard for anyone to give me their opinion without some facts. so if anybody has some ideas let me know. thanks!

I have had the same thing happen to me approching the top of second gear, it only does it sometimes, it will kind of studder...and then continue. I thought it may have been a valve spring issue?

thanks. im sure i weight less than an f body but i havent got it on a scale yet. all i did was open the cutouts and take my air filter off, also lowered my tire pressure to 25 psi. all minor probably worth nothing, but the tire pressure does help me hook better

If your times got progressively slower, I have a couple questions:
How were the track conditions as the night progressed?
Did you give the car time to cool down?
What thermostat do you have in it?
Does it have factory tuning?
I ask because, if you're running the factory thermostat and tuning (fan settings specifically), then you're going to start getting into some heat soak issues. From the factory, the fans aren't programmed to turn on until 225 (low speed) and 230 (high speed). At that temperature, the PCM is already pulling timing, which will result in less power.
Although running at the track is fun, combining summer time with hot lapping will usually result in progressively slower times as the night goes on.

well i have the fans set up to keep the motor at 200 degrees and it always keeps it within a few degrees. however, i could be getting some heat in the tranny. if i get some opinions about it on here, i might go with an aftermarket tranny cooler. the air temp was getting somewhat cooler as the night went on. i would think it would run better as it got cooler tho. i cant tell you about humidity, althought some track veterans said the track was getting better. i was making a lap on an average of 10 minutes. i was racing in the quick 8 so a couple of laps were within 5 minutes. i have a 180 degree stat

Hey just my .02 about the rev limiter.... I just put 3.42's in my Pontiac Firebird Formula it came w/ an LT1 - Auto - and 2.73's from the factory. And I had a friend play with the shift points and mph at each shift b/c mine was doing it really bad 1-2 and 2-3 but now he got rid of the rev limiter from 1-2 and we're working on the 2-3 shift...it takes some trial and error with adjustments but yeah lowering the mph like the other guy on here said should take care of the problem. Oh yeah and so u know mine only did it every once and a while also. I'm assuming just the way the car reacts from taking off either a good launch or a slower launch could make a difference???? Alot of wheel hop could probably make it hit the rev quicker, or even dropping it down into a lower gear while cruising could cause it to hit the rev limiter, either way good luck man.... Good times also. JAMES
