Default missing with .45 gap, fine with .35 gap?!?

like the title says, i have some 4 yr old msd wires on stock 94 lt1.when i gap the plugs to 35 it runs fine but when i open the gap to the factory 45 it cuts out with heavy throttle. does this sound like some cracked wires or maybe a bad coil or opti.all my ignition is factory but the wires..but theyare 5 years old. whats some opinions on the matter?

Believe it or not..the Gap makes a hell of a difference. I have NGK TR-55's in my 402 Sroker, and I burned a set out that were gapped at .045. It wouldn't even fire in the higher RPM Ranges. I just put a new set in gapped at .030, and it runs like a champ. I have 10.8:1 Compression, but the factor there was that the NGK is a Plug designed to run a little cooler, not to have a big gap in it and heat up.

So what should people with mainly stock, to bolt ons, gap their plugs at?

Also, (not to hijack sorry), but are Delco R44TS any good for LT1s? I have a set laying around is why I ask.

Depends on the Plug and the Temperature Range it's supposed to operate at.

Sounds like a weak coil to me, or coil wire. Should be no problem firing a plug@.045 on a basically stock car.

I have 12.77to1 compression, mine are firing at .045. I have an Accel 300+ ignition.

Between .035 and .045 gap, no power gain there.

aye. The air gap is there to add resistance to the secondary ignition circuit. The bigger the gap, the more resistance. If you have to lower your gap... then you have a weak primary (coil).

ok...well i do have colder plugs so maybe that is one reason...the coil could be a possibility too...but also..i always heard if you can run a bigger gap..then there is hidden power in it..i dont know how true this is but i have always noticed that my exhaust always smelled a little rich..i dont have egr stuff on and have heard that with the egr off it will make it run a little leaner..
