95-97 opti is vented , "helping" prevent moisture build up and corrosion inside of the unit. The vent is connected to a vaccum source, like the intake manifold.

You can , but because of several differences you would have to convert more than just the opti itself. .

To swap, the later distributor, vacuum harness, distributor harness, and timing cover must be used. A camshaft with a longer dowel pin and a hole in the center is required, along with a modified cam gear or 95 or later timing set or the LT4 or LT4 extreme duty timing set. The best time to do this is when you're doing a rebuild or cam swap anyways, because you will be removing and reinstalling a cam for this job.

Hope that helps

Will

If you want, you can buy the MSD cap and rotor which are all vented. Then you don't have to convert anything at all. You can even buy the whole MSD optispark which, IMO, is a much better unit than stock. I wouldn't waste my money on any other brand opti. Just order the one for your year car and it will be vented and come with the appropriate hoses to connect it to the intake manifold and intake elbow. You'll just have to make a hole in the elbow.

Get a kit from MSD, either the whole Opti or just their cap and rotor. I did replace just cap and rotor when I had my 1994 Trans am, it did convert it to a vented design without any major modifications. Well worth the $150 it costed me back then, at that time almost everyone was speculating about it, I was lucky enough to get one of the first and install it in my car. Let me say that it was one of the best things I did to that car. That kit converts early optis to a vented design.
