how hight do you rev the stock bottom end?
hey guys. im curious how high you guys are revving your stock bottom end lt1's. i want to do a cam, but noticed a lot of talk of power above 6000 rpms. i plan on springs, lifters, rockers, and cam, but everything else stock, so im not sure if i want a cam that doesnt make power until 6000rpms

i have shift points at 6900 for about 15k miles...year and a half...i changed my oil every 1500 miles and had an extra quart in there all the time...but i even have 6 quarts in my daily....
i hit the limiter at 7200 about 10 times...motors still running today shifting at 6700
has about 20k on it

I have my stock bottom end rebuilt. I put it all together with new bearings and a 6 quart oil pan and high volume pump. I was only spinning it to 5800 but now I have reset my shift to 6200 and going to the track saturday!

During the shift I keep mine below 6500, this is different from shift points as from the time of command till the shift actually completes there will be a couple hundred rpm rise. Last year I was keeping it a little lower.
I did lose a rod bearing in my first LT1 last year though, it had over 100K and had been cammed for 30K miles before I put this heads and cam on it and then ran this for 6-7K miles before it let go. The current stock shortblock I scored and found with just 41K miles and I put in a new oil pump pressure spring in. Part of me wonders if the spring in the old motor was weak and worn and not delivering the pressure it should have, or if just a bearing swap earlier would have saved it????
An educated guess would be my car makes peak power about 6100rpms.

I will admit this is not my daily driver but,i do drive it about 50 miles a week.GOOD OIL PRESSURE is the key factor in my block staying together.Im talking 80 psi at wot.(Melling HV oil pump)I wish i could give you guys some time slips to prove that this car hauls *** or mabe a vid.I got to wait till I get a real cpu instead of my phone.

93k mile stock bottom end, rev limiter is set at 6800. shift 1-2 and 2-3 at 6200, carry 3rd and 4th through 6500 (3rd ends the 1/8th, 4th ends the 1/4)
car doesn't hold oil pressure worth a sh*t, when I bought the car the oil pressure guage sat on 0 at idle, and moved to about 30 at high rpm when hot. had to scrape the sludge out of the heads just to get a socket on 2 of the head bolts.
anyway: I could never ask for a more rock-solid motor in my life. I've beat this car to death day in and day out. hell, I ran it 3 quarts low on oil while making quite a few 4th gear, 6800rpm pulls on the highway, pulled a rod and main cap off- bearings look practically new!

You will always get those lucky guys that managed to run their engine up to 857432967984763 RPMs and do just fine, then on the other hand you have the guy that goes to 6500 not even 5 times and spins a main bearing. I would not take a stock bottom end past 6200 RPM if you care about your engine having much longevity. I mean yeah like others have stated it's more than possible to go higher and be just fine, but the question is whether or not that extra RPM is worth risking a blown engine. I guess to some it might be, but I don't really see the point. Just my 2 cents. Take it with a grain of salt.

The point is that i make power till the time i shift.To add more i dont think luck has as much to do with it.I will say proper maintance and enough oil pressure.I will agree that it is more of a risk.Think of it this way bearings in a stock motor are not much diffrent than the ones in a rebuilt one.The difference is in better oil control and mabe the balance is more spot on.Hell you can do that stuff to a stock bottom end and it is not very difficult or exspensive.I paid 250 for the current short block in my car so no i dont really care if i blow it up.I have one on the engine stand ready to go if that ever happens.I guess if your worried about blowing your engine then don't hotrod your car around.
